So, Then! Golgoroth! (Destiny)

After a highly rocky road with the previous bosses, we finally hit the Golgoroth checkpoint last night. After some learning through suffering, we all eventually discovered the mechanics of the Golgoroth challenge mode. After our 6th person switched the gaze, most of us were aware of the UI saying we failed to catch his gaze at the end of each circular. Does that mean hypothetically, that Golgoroth's gaze can be rotated...just forever? Is that possible? Or would the game catch on and say 'okay, that's enough' and just close him back up or something? Because that MIGHT be useful to us.
