As you noted, knowing when to stop is important. If you don't, then it trivializes the conflict. Notice how the Marines in Aliens stop the wisecracking when shit hits the fan.

I am tired of characters who are always cool, and always badass. Give me Indiana Jones where half the time in Raiders he looks terrified he's going to die. I'll take that over ObiWan who cuts through battledroids like butter and cracks jokes while completely surrounded.

Humor must also be natural. It's guardians of the galaxy vs ghostbusters reboot. There's a reason why one of these tanked and will be forgotten, while the other was beloved and got at least two sequels. This feels more like trying too hard. If the character wouldnt say it if they were real and nobody was watching, then it's not natural.
