Huh, I thought the Bungie era Halo story was the best. This explains why it went down the toilet with 343's expansions, they stopped having good hard SF writers take a look at the plot ahead of time.

I think you misunderstood. Larry Nice and Jerry Pournelle weren't consulted on the writing, they were just asked if the similarities were going to result in a lawsuit.

In fact, by your supposition, 343I'd writing should be leaps and bounds ahead of Bungie's because 343I did have a hard sci-do writer give feedback on their story. They even hired him to write a trilogy of books about the Forerunner.

I once talked to another fan at Worldcon '14, and he said that a lot of Halo's DNA comes from Mil Sci-Fi of the 80's and 90's. I am not sure if that is true, but I am convinced that Eric Nylund and Eric Trautmann and the others on Halo's early franchise team were big science fiction nerds.

That is probably not so true of 343i. Some are, but they aren't calling all the shots.
