I'd be surprised if there wasn't a good deal of character customisation

We went from a male but personality-neutral protagonist, to an unknown gender (but assumed male?) and even-more-so personality neutral protagonist, to an explicitly neutral-gender and also neutral-personality protagonist.

I'd say that trajectory is a statement of intent.
