It's 9 pieces per character. 4 heads, 2 arms, 2 chests (3 for warlock), 1 leg (none for warlock)

Looks like you're correct. I'm missing a few exotic armor pieces for my alts. Back when I was strange coin poor I passed some up. Now the question is, do I really need to have every exotic, really? hmm...

As someone who has every exotic... no. No you really don't lol.
