I think there's an important point you're missing here (Destiny)

If it's that much fun, just run the race anyways!

It's just not that simple. With the chests, everyone has a clear start/finish mark, as well as a timer. Without it, randomly getting people to race with you is almost impossible.

Our group didn't "race" competitively, but we did have some cool collisions while rushing back to the chest.

I sent Korny flying once, and had others do it to me. SomeOtherGuy just likes to park his sparrow where ever, you know? ;)

Side note, the rainbow of colors from sparrow drives was neat. Not everyone was using timebreaker!
