Buy Exotic engrams first; decrypt and see if you get anything you already have; Free(ish) E.Shards!
Also; if you get anything you already have, but it has a better roll - Sharding your existing fully-upgraded Exotic will most likely dismantle into TWO E.Shards.
And if you need more motes, the Speaker will give you some for your Ascendent shards, if you happen to have an abundance of one and not the other. :)
