How should you review the expansions? (Destiny)

by Cody Miller @, Music of the Spheres - Never Forgot, Thursday, May 10, 2018, 10:36 (2188 days ago)

So Destructiod gave Warmind a 55.

But like, how do you actually review the expansions? Curse of Osiris was extremely weak… except for the Raid Lair. Like, if CoO were nothing but the raid lair it would get a very high mark because the raid lair is awesome.

But the raid lair was basically half a raid. So… do you knock it for not being what it should be? How do you review Warmind before doing what is sure to be the best part? Do you take points off for the re-introduction of stupid grind, or not because the campaign was alright?

It's not so simple anymore.

Was Curse of Osiris and Warmind worth my time and money? •Yes •Maybe •No

Done.

Maybe it's because I'm an old guy, but I just don't understand the way people these days all have to be critics. And this is certainly not directed at you, Cody, I'm just speaking the general populous.

Can't things just be "pretty good"? Or does everything have to be The Best or The Worst.

That's not very helpful for someone else though… since everyone values their time and money differently. And because a price drop would suddenly increase the game's rating by that logic.

I think you're describing the problem perfectly though. Some are going to say 5/5 was totally worth my time and money, and others are going to say 2/5 not enough content with a mediocre story. As much as they are relied on in the game (and movie) industry rating something with a "score" is never a very good metric for if a game is going to be a good experience for an individual. It's why I tend to look at places that usually rate things similarly to how I would rate them instead of looking it up on Metacritic.

It could be helpful from a trusted source. And price would absolutely effect a rating. If they charged $100, it better be a genre changing update. If these expansions would have been free, would you have received them differently?

There are tons of factors to consider, and people can argue endlessly if something is "good" or not. The question should be, is it enjoyable?

(ManKitten begins to chant: "Is Destiny the best? Yes. Maybe. No.")
Does anyone else here listen to Le Batard on ESPN or are my constant references being lost?

Dan Le Batard? You mean that guy that looks like a disgraced five-star sous chef attempting to regain his popular status via a YouTube channel produced by his niece?

Nah, never heard of him.

Score each "area" or "mode"that the game offers individually, average together.

Example:

Core Campaign = 30/100
Casual Multiplayer = 60/100
Competitive Multiplayer = 80/100
Raid = 80/100
Firefight = 50/100
Mechanics (movement, supers gunplay, etc) = 100/100
DLC = 10/100

Average = 58/100

That score lines up with my personal opinion. For the past 4 years, Destiny has been mechanically fun to play, but shit narrative and mediocre MP. With Halo, I never got bored of shooting the same aliens year after year because the story was just, simply better for me. Because Destiny's story is so anorexic, the aliens don't hold up the same, ya dig?

I think the Hive are really frickin neat-o. But I'm bored of them because they aren't holding my interest. Eh.

Sorry, unapologetic Destiny fans. The studio can make a really solid playing game, but they lost their mojo when it comes to something that is satisfying from a narrative perspective.

Sure, bungie, your game *plays* excellent.
Sure, bungie, your worlds and characters *look* beautiful.

But you bit off more than you can chew.

You can't keep pace with what the fanbase wants from this game (and on that note, the fanbase is admittedly spoiled, and unrealistic with a lot of stuff)

You can't satisfy your fans on an empty, snack-of-a-game. It's popcorn. Not filling.

Your attempt at having and open world, open narrative, yet linear and compelling story ended up pleasing no one. You didn't paint yourself into a corner, more like you are too scattered.

We've entered an area where most games are moving to a "as a service" model, where content is smaller, but trickled out steadily and a game lasts longer than it used to.

There are games that focus on the more "one and done" approach with traditional sequels and single player approach.

But that's what I see- they stick to the one thing they are good at.

Overwatch barely has a narrative and people love it.
Wolfenstein, God of War etc had great single player stories and people love it.
Fortnite is pure, party multi-player now, and people love it.
Mario Odyssey is fun platforming for the casual adventurer.

Destiny is.... geeze, who can tell anymore?

I'm not even being pessimistic, I just honestly don't understand what the hell they are doing anymore :/

On all counts. Dunno how, but I am holding out hope that this comet thing actually turns out amazing and is worth buying. If not, I think I’m done giving Bungie the money for this franchise. Still a big Bungie fan, but really feeling burned and losing faith on Destiny as a franchise. If comet doesn’t do it, next game franchise from Bungie please.

Comments I've heard from a couple of podcasts from people that attended the community summit was basically "Warmind is ok but OMG, this fall will be lit, fam." I don't think that's exactly how they said it but basically that.

We’ve had this discussion before, but that honestly worries me, if only just a little. The things those streamers seems to want are often the exact opposite of what I want.

The main thing that the content creators seem to be excited about, and keep saying about the Fall content, and that even Bungie has started to say, is that with fall content and beyond they are working on "bringing the hobby back". So if that phrase doesn't sound good to you, then I'd say you do have some reason to be worried.

That potentially sounds awesome to me. Look for a new thread this evening. I have some thoughts about that exact thing, I just need to write them out. I’ll sum it up with “Why is Power Level still a thing?” Hell, there’s my thread title.

Because ‘content creators’ want the grind. They want something to differentiate themselves from the casuals, and the grind is perfect because TIME is one thing they will always have more of since they play the game for their jobs. So they complained when Bungie smartly took the grind away, fixating on that instead of the actual things that need improving. They stop streaming, and Bungie caves.

It’s the worst.

Not having to grind to do Leviathan was so great. Now? I don’t even know how the fuck I can GET to 370. Seriously. Other than milestones… how do you get more powerful than 350?!

Milestones and Exotics are one of the main ways.

The other main way is to run the Leviathan and World Eater.

Normal mode Leviathan, plus executing the challenge mode, and getting all the underbelly chests should result in 6 loot drops that will be at(above) your power level, plus one guaranteed exotic from the underbelly, plus a handful of other legendary engrams. Eater of Worlds (raid lair) gives 3 powerful level drops, plus the extra chest (possibly another exotic) from getting all the rings on the way down.

Using only Milestones and with careful planning and infusion policies, you can definitely get to 350 using only a single character. I think my PC Hunter got to 355 with lucky drops on the old Raids.

If you do the same with all 3 characters, you can easily get to 360 and possibly 370 if you switch smartly in between Milestones.

Of course, that's all a lot of work, but you are trying to get to end-game content within the first week, so tons of work is to be expected.

CoO Weapons

If you haven't got all the Curse of Osiris weapons, they appear to drop at similar levels to milestones.
