I tried the new PVP mode (Destiny)

I played one game last night and ended up on the other side of a similar beatdown.

I think there was only a brief moment during the third and final vault hack where they were able to slow us down enough where we weren't making progress on the current objective. Hopefully not every game of Breakdown ends in a similar massacre.

Gotta guve the blueberry patches time to figure out how to play the game mode (or that they don’t want to) and then it should be more even.

Though I’m pretty sure most players still don’t understand Supremacy.

I mean, you just kill stuff, right? Those things that pop out are just to let you know they're really dead. :p

I mean, we’re talking about a group of people that hear the Drifter tell them to bank motes immediately to win, yet they still stand around killing those last few enemies for no reason whatsoever.

To be fair, sometimes it could be useful. If I'm carrying 13 when the drifter says we've got enough for a Primeval, I'm definitely grabbing two more so I can shove an Ogre in the other team's face. I've also been on teams where we'll be at 60-ish, but coordinate things so three of us send medium blockers at the same time. Definitely helpful when the other team hasn't called their Primeval yet. Less helpful when they have called it and have a Nightstalker with Orpheus Rigs on their team ;p

That’s fair. But my understanding is that it caps at 75. So if you deposit 15, but you only needed 7 to summon, you aren’t actually going to send an ogre. I haven’t paid enough attention to know if that’s true or not. I keep forgetting to test it.

I'm pretty sure this is true. I don't see a 'Teammate sent a small blocker' message when they bank 5+ but we only needed 3.

I'm finding Gambit more and more frustrating, and it's situations like this that add to that.

Last night, the other team beat us to a primeval, but not by much. We had 74 motes, and a guy holding 8 - he refused to bank until he hit 10. He got killed by an invader as he was picking up those last two motes, and we ended up losing. JUST BANK THE DAMN MOTES.

I was hoping it wouldn’t end up like this, but Gambit has become an activity I can’t really stomach solo. Just having one other person to coordinate with helps a whole lot. Running with a full team last night for a few hours was incredibly fun, even when we lost. When I lose and I’m playing solo, it becomes more frustrating. At least when I lose because our team of randos were on completely different wavelengths. Sometimes it clicks and we still lose, and that’s fine, but the matches were I’m internally yelling at the idiot to just bank his damn motes already really wear me down.

I was trying to explain this to people the other night; I'm not sure I can.

Playing solo, as you say, is super-frustrating (in a way that playing Crucible has never been, for me).

Playing with a group, though, is just as bad, in totally different ways. I'm not an incompetent player; I do okay at most things... but in Gambit, I always feel useless. I rarely get to pick up many motes (unless my team has made me the mote-picker-upper, specifically, and even then I'm less effective than pretty much anyone else), and even when I'm NOT picking up motes, I'm usually DFL on enemy kills. Occasionally, I'm having a decent night, and I can do okay against enemy players (both in our zone and after I invade), but often I'm a little off, and I get killed 100% of the time (when I'm off, it's WAY worse than any other PvP mode). Winning or losing, it just feels bad; I'm either not helping on the win at all, or I'm the cause of the loss.

I might be done with Gambit except for the occasional Daily Challenge (for the powerful engram). Which makes me really sad. :(

It makes me really sad you're coming to that conclusion! I end up feeling the way you do at times during Gambit, so I've started choosing roles that will still help, even if I'm not shining on the leaderboard:

-Be a Banker escort: Run behind one of your team's designated bankers and pick up extra motes they can't carry, but more importantly provide AOE damage on mobs, or cover fire against snipers/invaders.

-Manage the bank: post up near the bank (usually up high, not in the immediate vicinity) and be the first to clear any blockers the other team sends over. Also provide a sort of overwatch to spot invaders.

-Pave the way: Kill all the mobs, snag none of the motes. Let your bankers do that. Works well up close as a titan with a shotgun or AR, swords end up collecting motes. Momentum is the key. Can also be done reasonably well at range with Polaris Lance and a rocket launcher with Cluster Bomb.

These are the roles I usually play. I don't feel like fighting the randos for motes (unless I've got a stupid bounty for it), so I'll hang out between the bank and whatever area the enemies are spawning into and drop. If I hear blockers spawn in, I'll turn and try to clear those out so they're not in the way when our mote collectors try to make a deposit.

If I see the motes I've made sit too long and no teammates are coming for them, I'll pick them up so they're not lost, but sometimes that doesn't work out so well.

I'm glad you've found ways that make you feel useful in the game. I've tried all of those roles; they don't help my feelings. I simply don't have fun playing this gametype.

Pretty much since day one, I've been a strong advocate of the mantra that if it's not fun, don't do it. I see no compelling reasons not to take my own advice.

(I'm glad the rest of you are having fun, though!)

It's good advice! It's still sort of a bummer, though, that you don't enjoy it. I know not every activity is for everyone, but, damnit, they should be!

I totally get it. I've felt that way before, and even though I logically know that the people I'm playing with probably don't mind, it still feels bad to know I'm holding back a team that would otherwise being doing much better without me.

And couldn't stop laughing maniacally throughout the whole thing. Easily my favorite thing in Destiny in a long while. Whipped up a quick montage of some of my favorite moments from that game, and even got the perfect reward at the end!

Hopefully things are even more fun with a full team.
