My First Montage - Feedback (Destiny)

Hey all,

I just found this site while searching for downloadable cinematics for my first montage. The video is finished, and can be seen here: http://youtu.be/lNiyf_SGufw

Please enjoy, and any feedback is more than welcome!

First of all, welcome!

I'd normally say that the intro was a little long, but I didn't actually mind it. It fit the theme of the music for me, personally. The editing was fairly good, especially with it being your first. A person can have the best snippets of action in the world, but editing them together poorly will kill the video. Syncing it with the emotion of the music was decent, too. That you pretty much saved the "OH SHI-" ones for when the music got heavy was a good choice.

I'd like to mention your lead-in time before the action. There are a couple of hiccups (forgivable for me due to how it worked with the music) but for the most part you give enough lead-in for the audience to get a grip on the change of scene without it being jarring. I see this a lot where people don't include enough, or stretch it out far too long. You also vary how long it is instead of being just one set amount of time -- I really, really like that, as it keeps the video from feeling formulatic and helps to keep anticipation high.

Also, waving goodbye to the bubble guy? CLASSY.

All in all, I enjoyed it a lot.

Thank you so much for taking the time to watch the video, as well as the wonderful feedback.

I had 2 major concerns. One was that the intro was too long, and the other was that certain PvP clips did not match the climaxing music.

As far as the intro, that was a result of the montage not knowing what it wanted to be when I first began. I originally was going to make sort of a Destiny dedication video. However, I decided after the intro that I wanted to turn it into a PvP montage, so I just combined the two.

Towards the end, I was afraid that the clips where I was throwing grenades and waiting for them to go off did not match the climatic part of the song. Overall, I think it worked out, but perhaps if I had more footage I could have made that part a little better.

Like I said in the description, I did not have any capturing software. I used only clips from my Xbox One DVR, and then I used Movie Maker to create the video. I think that as I start saving more clips, I will make a montage 2.0 to go with the same song.

Thanks again!

You had a couple of nice four-pieces earlier in the vid that would have fit in really nicely there; maybe move them around and just hit us with four or five straight at the end there. Nice work all around!

Thanks, and I agree. As I neared the end of the video, I realized that maybe I could have moved all the grenade kill clips to the beginning. But I decided rather than starting from scratch (due to all the clips already being trimmed to fit the music where they were), I would roll with it.

I can't thank you guys enough for giving it the time of day and providing your feedback. Just awesome.

There wouldn't be much point in that. Choose a new song for your next project. If you really want to come back to it, leave it at least a year and get a few more videos under your belt first. Then you'll be able too see some progress.

Also, do you feel that the clip at the end without music takes away from the impact of the rest of the video, or is it a nice complement to the denouement?

I thought it was fine. It could have worked pretty well as the first clip too.

I never even thought about that!
