Easily the most views any of my comments has ever received.

God that whole thread is full of gems.

My favorite exchange was this:

Someone trying to claim Quake had rocket jumping before Marathon, HA!

My favorite one was further down the one sourcing my comment, from the same user:

Hey! I resemble that remark!

On a random note, some people are bizarrely sensitive to the issue of which games had grenade jumping first. I actually had a discussion on GAF once where someone, even knowing about older games like Marathon, was arguing that Quake was first because its engine could handle general 3D environments. Not "the first to allow X sorts of trick complexity" or some such business; the user was arguing that grenade jumping in games like Marathon literally wasn't grenade jumping because of things like the bridges-and-balconies issue.

That's one of the most nonsensical things I've heard, haha. I may be a Bungie fanboy, but that's just obsessive.

Actually, my memory failed and I'm conflating things.

The discussion I was mostly thinking of involved someone acknowledging that rocket jumping existed, but that it was a very limited vertical phenomenon merely of switching between 2D planes (versus Quake, which apparently was somehow special in allowing you to skip over sections of levels and that sort of business), and that players in games like Marathon were incapable of thinking of the play area as a 3-dimensional space.

He was sort of arguing that the older geometry representation didn't allow rocket jumping in a "complete" form, but not that it wasn't "real" per se.

On a side random note, this is why it's good to search for things before telling stories (or why it's dangerous to search for things after telling stories, lol).

That site gets weirder and weirder. When I post on the subreddit all I get are replies about pens and Avril Lavigne.
