With the right combination of gear (and the right location), it's actually pretty painless. It's been a little while, and I'm not near anything I can look up gear perks with, but I was wearing something that 1) gave me an extra force barrier punch, and 2) had a pretty good chance of recharging force barrier 100% on a successful hit. Running around a lot of low-level creatures, it was easy to get 8-10 force barrier kills in a row - and even when it needed recharging, there was just 30-45 seconds between empty and full. (Only the first punch counts for the ability kill, but that's where the exotic gear helps out.)

How tight is the timing between killing the knights and the boss?

You need to kill the boss within 30 seconds of killing a Knight. So if you're going for all 3 swords, you have a 30 second window that begins the moment you kill the first knight to then kill the other 2 knights and the boss.

Just tell me preemptively how not to die, and we're good.

Easy: you stand way back up on the ledge and snipe the vex using your Ice Breaker while the rest of your fireteam does all the hard work.

Ugh, I'm still on the crucible part of step 1. Guess I need to play some PvP. :)

1 note about getting all 3 at the same time: It is a nightmare. Fighting the Dark Blade while dodging all 3 knights is the most challenging thing I've ever tried to do in Destiny. I've only ever attempted multiple sword unlocks with LFG groups, but we never came close to completing it even while going for just 2 swords.

So if be happy to try getting all 3 at the same time with you, but we might be better off just running the strike 3 times.

The best tactic I've come up with so far is using a Titan with a blinding bubble to pacify the Knights for a few moments. 3 defenders with blinding bubbles might stand a fair chance of surviving the Knights' attacks long enough to complete the encounter.
