Thats… Wi-Fi for ya (reply)

Welp, I learned my lesson. Grabbing the spare network cable was one of the first things I should have done. Especially since I'm in a fairly dense wifi situation to begin with thanks to living in an apartment building.

I wonder if the Xbone's test that showed low download speed does something more fancy that the straight upload / download tests I was performing on all my other devices. The scary moral here (besides the above) might actually be to trust Microsoft more! :p

Thats… Wi-Fi for ya (reply)

Yeah, that's the thing about WiFi that people often forget - even if you configure it correctly on your side and everything appears working, it can sometimes crap out due to environmental factors beyond your control (your neighbor's wifi or other wireless device) that aren't necessarily there when you set it up. Speed testing is generally not useful in detecting things like that due to the transitory nature of such interference, and because such tests are not as sensitive to packet loss as realtime network applications like gaming.

I wonder if that's what happened with mine. I was doing ok on wifi but suddenly started having the same problems. I had noticed new wifi signals from my neighbors around the same time, but didn't connect the dots. I went back to a wired connection and Destiny runs great (except for crashing when I use the Vanity).

Thats… Wi-Fi for ya (reply)

Online games in general are extremely vulnerable to packet loss. A common problem with wireless is unpredictable packet loss. For example, your neighbor could have set up a new wireless access point on a similar frequency band. Our could have started using their microwave a lot more or there is a crappy wireless landline phone near you.

Your first step to investigating mysterious networking problems should always be use a wired connection. We have a help article about this: https://www.bungie.net/en/Support/Troubleshoot?oid=12915.

Played any other games? (reply)

Oddly, the Xbone's latest test reported under 3Mb down... That's very much not right...

Keep in mind that those sort of speed tests are VERY far from being the ultimate oracle of network quality. All they do is cram all they can through for a few brief moments, and report how much they were able to cram. One anomalous result shouldn't be taken to have any meaning at all. That might have just been the moment when everyone in your city got home and started streaming Netflix. I'd say based on everything else you're seeing, your end is probably fine.

The most reasonable explanation is that there's a crappy route somewhere between your ISP and Destiny's servers. Unfortunately, your chances of actually tracking something like that down without the help of both of those entities isn't great. But it'll probably work itself out eventually. Things like that either get corrected, or traffic starts taking a different path.
