Most of these things are better done with a vector tool rather than a bitmap tool. It's been years since I used the GIMP but if I remember correctly it's more akin to a bitmap tool like Photoshop while Inkscape is more like Illustrator.

I suspect it's gotten better. This isn't based on recent usage, but I did recently look at it for a new machine. The interface looks a lot more like Photoshop now.

Yeah, the hardest part is unlearning all the muscle-memory that has cropped up by using Photoshop.

I used GIMP to make some of those Deeply Flawed Raiders T-shirt designs last year.

You should look into getting something like GIMP if you're having fun doing this. http://www.gimp.org/

While perhaps you like the challenge of doing this in PowerPoint, you do have alternatives that would give you more tools and are designed specifically for what you are doing.
