and.... yup, just not for me (reply)

You could really get the wrong impression if you're judging him by that picture and the Kanye rant, which struck me as a campy put-on, knowing Greg Miller. If I wasn't familiar with Greg Miller, though, I think I'd be put off, too.

Greg Miller is absolutely one of the nicest guys in game journalism. Colin Moriarity, too, although Colin does have more of an edge, but he is never mean-spirited or screechy--they're both mild mannered, sweet guys. (And I've met them a few times--their personalities are the same in person.) They are also honest-to-God best friends, and their mutual love and respect show through in their broadcasts. I listen to them even though I usually care about only half of what they talk about. (Neither is big on Destiny, BTW.)

Greg Miller's rant against Kanye West is the very first thing that got me interested in Taylor Swift :)

What's really hilarious about the ending of that is that Kanye does have a video game now, so Greg has to make good on his promise!

We talked at a urinal once. (reply)

I was guardianing at RTX using the toilet. Gameovergreggy showed up and went to the urinal near me. Some guy said "Greg Miller! Woo!" then walked out of the bathroom.

"That was weird," I said.
"It was," said he.

Then we washed our hands at approximately the same time, and then I left and told some guy working Security for Becca Frasier (that's her name right?) and Jason Saldana's signing that someone wanted him and I would take over temporarily, and had them sign my stuff.

I never saw Greg Miller again. I heard he died.

Only about 85% of this story is true.

Funny thing about Greg Miller (reply)

You nailed it.

They need a Greg Miller type for their streams.

I've avoided anything everything Kinda Funny because they choose this as their main marketing image when they launched:

Is he as obnoxious as that image makes it seem?

Lol, I've never seen that. I just found Kinda Funny through their podcasts.

I don't think he's annoying at all, but I could see how someone might. He's very energetic and always "on," but in a good way that hosts should be. I like the way they produce content, too. I'd recommend picking one of their Gamescast or PS I Love You (PlayStation specific) videos and giving it a shot. You'll probably know within the first minute of it's for you or not.

Any thoughts on what they showed? (reply)

Thinking about the stream in general, I wish there was a lot less talk from the players about the act of playing the game "guys over here, shoot this one, help help" - none of that was needed. I think they should seriously re-evaluate their formula and have players stay silent while the designers (who are not playing) discuss what's being done or looked at, or to at least minimize "game-chatter" coming into their discussion.

Yeah, I think the closest Bungie came was last year during the (first couple) HoW livestreams, but even those could be improved.

IMO, the ideal setup is a panel consisting of designers, Deej/Cozmo and a community guest- you know, someone who is actually curious about the content being shown- watching, commentating on, and answering questions about a live playthrough by testers- people who are familiar enough with the content to show it off in a cool way, without the distraction of trying to verbally describe what's going on.

Just want them to avoid loud obnoxious streamers. They're unbearable and I avoid all of the streams because of how awful the initial ones were.

That's a more positive outlook. I also agree with it. I think the whole point was to promote the gjallarvængr, but they really did show us some cool unfinished junk and concept art. Where kahz saw boredom, I actually saw "oh man. What can we give these guys in addition to the dumb sparrow?" It was kind of endearing how they tried. Unfinished lighting, obvious mistakes, I liked it.

Hey now - I appreciated the concept art!

I just felt like they didn't know what they wanted to show once they got into the game world, and the stuff they did show wasn't really examined or "showed off" so much as mentioned in passing "oh yeah the shanks are still working... doot doot" I'm tuning into the stream about changes to the cosmodrome... go full Art Nerd on me! There's nothing more interesting than watching someone who loves their subject talk go full geek about it.

Any thoughts on what they showed? (reply)

I get that he was hired for his writing and not his on-camera persona, but they could really benefit from finding someone who enjoys being filmed to host these things. Deej just seems so uncomfortable and, for lack of a better word, disengaged from it all.

I disagree pretty strongly here. I don't get that sense at all.

Agree to disagree on this one then. He's not unwatchable to me, but he's certainly not the person I'd pick to give guided tours of my game. He seemed more interested in how ad hoc the addition of the art director was to the stream than in showing off the game to the audience. I'm of the opinion that, whenever hosting anything, you need the audience to feel like the show is all for them, and you have to project their desires into your questions for the guests. It's an art form and it's difficult to master, and I just don't feel like Deej has any sort of practice or training at it. He's not a bad person (in fact I bet he's a very good guy irl), he's just not a professional TV host, and when streaming content to potentially millions of fans, it's worthwhile to hire someone who is.
