Anyway. I like the little box animations, it makes it feel a little special opening it compared to the Nth engram at the crypt arch, which I often don't even bother to look at before I shard it. I am a bit irritated that after all this time getting them I still have incomplete Warlock and Titan sets, and their source is bit of a mystery. There isn't a good link to the lore so it does highlight the fact I'm in a game and breaks immersion a bit.

The record books harken in part back to some of the alpha game footage, where each quest was basically a story, and filled out a section of your guardian's story. I wish I could find a picture of it but for some reason it resists my google foo with cold, dead spite.

I think that a book that filled out the lore of the game as you played through missions and gave more detail on the rewards you were getting would be amazing. Especially if the text changed to match some of the achievements of your character (i.e. completing the mission to stop oryx would give one ending, but killing him in hard mode would change it and add more depth).

of course right now the books are just these little add on inventory items because I feel Bungie is still using somewhat crude tools to implement them. Perhaps Destiny 2 we will get them, perhaps not.

I would love to get what I thought Destiny was going to be, Skyrim in space with Halo style combat. We really need the world to expand, to become more interactive, then these little UI flourishes will be unnecessary.

This is misleading. You still have to transfer the book to the character who completed the thing, just like with the Y2 moments book.

You didn't have to transfer the book with the MoT, you could obtain a copy for each character that contained your progress for free from the Eververse trading co, and continued to track progress on all three characters (the one exception being the fragments of course which you had to get all of on a single character). Plus, according to all reports I heard all you really had to do was login to all three characters before continuing working on it, you didn't even have to get the record book. We also don't know how "misleading" it is since the RoI book isn't even out yet or did I misunderstand and you meant the SRL book?

No misunderstanding on your part. I had to shuffle the book between my guys to get the things for them; I was not aware that there was any way to get extra copies.

You have to access your character each week for the Sterling Treasure to appear at the Postmaster. Nice try, tho. ;-)

See, that's a perfect example of where having a book (or tablet) would make perfect sense both functionally and in-universe.

But having a record book for campaign progress feels different to me. it feels like unnecessary "gamification". I do understand the role they fill (I like the idea of being able to quickly and easily track my progress), but Destiny's UI already has several different avenues of progress tracking. The quest screen, bounties, the "mission" items in our inventory screen, the quest Kiosk in the tower. I'd rather see our RoI progress tracked through any of those avenues.

I think they are trying to make certain activities feel more special than others?

Could be, although I'd say things like exotic quests and better storytelling + mission design is the way to achieve that (which Bungie, to their credit, has been pushing towards).

I see things like record books as a result of Bungie realizing "oh, people really like STUFF. Getting stuff, opening stuff, collecting stuff, etc". To be clear, I have no problem with the ostensible function of the books... It's the way that function is presented that is immersion-breaking to me.

I have 30 some Sterling Treasures built up. I've opened a couple of them in the past. Sterling Treasure never seem to drop anything that is at level. So they would not help you (or me) at all get to 335. It always seems to be items that feature Taken style or Chroma to "look cool" that start at level 3 and need to be fully infused.

Does anyone have any suggestion for opening Sterling Treasures? Should I open them all before Rise Of Iron drops? Will they be no good after Rise Of Iron?

I would just open them now. They definitely won't have updated light levels, they are purposefully set at 3 so that they couldn't possibly give someone who bought them a light level boost. I assume you'll still be able to open them (otherwise people would complain if for some reason bought one and didn't open it before RoI drops), but even if they add something to the pool I'm guessing just like previous stuff that they are determined when you get them instead of when you open them. RoI is actually going to have new treasure called "radiant treasure" (from GI issue) which I assume will be the expansion's version of sterling treasure, meaning I doubt anything new will be added to sterling treasures.

As for holding onto them? No idea. I open mine immediately because I'm a crazy person.
