Taken King PS Exclusives possibly staying exclusive for RoI? (reply)

Yeah, I've been a "never pre-order" guy for a long, long time, but I figured it wouldn't hurt with Destiny because Bungie has never burned me. I should not have done it, especially because I went all-in to support the company that had given me so much joy over the years. They're in it for the profits, not the positive energy of happy fans.

Taken King PS Exclusives possibly staying exclusive for RoI? (reply)

I own a PS4 that I bought just for Destiny. I bought it because of the exclusives offered in the initial launch. And that disgusts me. I am disgusted that I fell for it. I am disgusted that Sony pulled this bullshit, that Activision agreed to it, that Bungie signed the contract with both of those other companies that allows it, and that everyone involved *knows* that their xbox fanbase is getting a sub-par product with every launch cycle.

I'd like to think these kinds of exclusives don't often have that far reaching of an influence for most people, but I'd love to see some kind of numbers. I think timed exclusives only really work for Call of Duty since it's so big, and I think Activision is using Destiny as an experiment for a different pay model. The leaked contract had the basics of where we're at as far as expansions, DLC, microtransactions, and "services" outlined and that was from 2012.

I know I ignore pretty much all this exclusive nonsense generally, though generally it's even more trivial content in most games. It's just more obnoxious because it's SO long, and because it's Bungie.

If it really bothers you, try and learn the lesson. I know I've stopped supporting companies in the past that did bullshit. I didn't buy any new Capcom games for about 3 or 4 years. If enough people do it the company might change. Or your company goes near bankrupt like Capcom.

As far as buying a console, waiting always pays off until you know what you're getting. I was pretty hardcore planing to go PS4 but decided to wait until more games were out. In that time Microsoft did a hard 180 and in my eyes became way more pro-consumer than Sony has been once we got past the actual console launches, plus there were more games I was interested on Xbox barring Destiny exclusive bullshit, and Bungie even let me experience that back on 360. There are enough exclusives on PS4 (mostly Japanese) that I'm interested in now that I'll get a PS4 eventually, plus I get to skip straight to the Neo. I don't think it will become my "main" console though, and maybe NX will change those plans anyways.

Taken King PS Exclusives possibly staying exclusive for RoI? (reply)

Reddit was digging through some of the wording on all of the Rise of Iron stuff from the last couple of days. It seems to imply that some if not all of the current PS Exclusive stuff (armor, weapons, quests, Crucible maps) are going to remain exclusive through Fall 2017. No clarification from Bungie or Activision yet, but Activision is generally very thorough with this kind of stuff.

https://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/4y4c3s/seems_like_sector_618_the_jade_rabbit_zen_meteor/

This could mean that there are new exclusives that they failed to mention, but I feel like Bungie would have teased more to come if that was the case. If this is accurate, it would probably mean this will be exclusive up until Destiny 2 is already out, thanks a lot Bungie.

I absolutely hate this shit. Exclusives that impact gameplay should not exist. I don't mind the PS exclusive armor that is purely cosmetic but offers no additional gameplay elements that aren't in the Xbox version, but the rest of it is awful. The game has, essentially, two different economies, two different pvp metas, two different strike lists, and so forth. It's gross, it's cumbersome to design around, and it's abusive to the consumer. Two people are paying the same amount for "the same" game but getting different products simply because of what platform they bought it for? I own a PS4 that I bought just for Destiny. I bought it because of the exclusives offered in the initial launch. And that disgusts me. I am disgusted that I fell for it. I am disgusted that Sony pulled this bullshit, that Activision agreed to it, that Bungie signed the contract with both of those other companies that allows it, and that everyone involved *knows* that their xbox fanbase is getting a sub-par product with every launch cycle.

It's gross gross gross and - to make it worse - it's effective. Any game with a cross platform release and decent hype will be susceptible to this kind of chicanery. It is, in my esteem, worse that a console exclusive game, because in those cases you don't get the money from the console players you're dicking over. In this case, you do, and they're paying the same amount of money for less game. Everyone involved should feel ashamed.

My thoughts exactly. For me personally, I'm never going to go over to the PlayStation side. Which means, I just have to live with getting boned (pun intended) every release. I get use to it more and more each time. And at the same time the aforementioned parties disgust me more and more each time.

I have to assume that this is Activision's doing, but Bungie allowed themselves to be put into this position when they choose to go with them as their publisher. Out of the possibly viable options I think either Ubisoft or Square Enix may have been better, but only they really know.

Due to the budget of the game, there were only 5 publishers in existence who could conceivably work with Bungie on Destiny:

1. Activision
2. Microsoft
3. Sony
4. Nintendo
5. EA

Nintendo and EA were ruled out immediately. Sony looked good but they had trouble communicating between Sony US and Sony Japan. That left MS and activision. Activision offered Bungie the chance to keep their IP, which was the tipping point over MS. In retrospect, there are several people at Bungie who would have chosen MS in hindsight. Under MS for Halo, they didn't own the IP but could develop the game almost as if they did. At Activision, it was the opposite; they owned the IP but were developing it almost as if Activision did.

At the time, the best choice was Activision given what they knew. Square and Ubisoft were not even on the table.

Are there major financial issues that they need the money from Sony? They've had several paid expansions, micro transactions, and red bull tie ins. Is that not enough to get them through to Destiny 2? Or is it just the cherry on top, where Sony says "here's some free money to promote our console?"

Destiny 2 did get pushed back like a year and we've all heard the reports of issues both internally and with the engine of the game itself. Sony also helped fund Street Fighter V to make it exclusive.

Though Activision could take the hit of a year delay way better than Capcom, so I'd guess the majority of it is the advertising dollars.

I thought I was okay with the exclusive stuff; it was annoying, but what's a year, really? But now it's 2 years, and not really 2 years, but AT LEAST 2 years. And even though it's not a lot of stuff, we have last year's exclusive stuff to judge by - 12 months was enough to seriously reduce the relevance of the exclusive guns (mostly because the online team had had several passes at adjusting them), 24 months will be even worse. Will I ever use the Jade Rabbit? If not, would I be less offended if they were more honest, and took out the word 'timed'?

Personally I think a full year is WAY too long for this kind of exclusive. At most I'd probably understand 3 months, but I've always thought a year is ridiculous. Especially with the way Destiny is updated. It's even worse when it seems like it's totally contradictory to Bungie's philosophy of the game having a certain "feel" to it for any given period of time.

I can't think of any other games that have such a long timed-exclusive. Activision itself only has a 30 day delay on CoD DLC, though yearly releases probably have a lot to do with that. I think The Division also has a 1 month delay, as do many other games. It's this kind of stuff that makes me want to stop supporting Bungie, I haven't bought an Activision game in years, since before last console generation. This nonsense is obviously going to remain at least through this generation, and more than likely onto the next since only the final game in the 10 years would likely release on it.

I have to assume that this is Activision's doing, but Bungie allowed themselves to be put into this position when they choose to go with them as their publisher. Out of the possibly viable options I think either Ubisoft or Square Enix may have been better, but only they really know.
