I can't quite find the photo at the moment, but one of the things at yesterday's event was a fairly large display of the underside of the Traveler, showing off the missing, damaged portion. Seems awful deliberate.

TLDR: What if the half dome structure in the European dead zone is the bottom chuck of the traveler that rasputin blew off? we go there to get our light and new abilities.

That is such a good idea I can almost guarantee Bungie didn't think of that.
