So it looks like my assumption was mostly correct on the reasons.

Lock behind the DLC (reply)

I’m genuinely curious as to why this had to be done. Dark Below didn’t lock you out of Hard mode VoG.

Hard mode VoG was also obsolete for progression when Dark Below came out. And the redone Heroics for all the old raids require Rise of Iron in Destiny 1.

I'm gonna guess it's either a raid stays in the latest progression but it gets DLC-required as part of keeping it around, or a raid becomes obsolete to play for progression and everyone can play it.. but good luck finding anyone that wants to?

By the end of D1, a raid was both. You could pick vanilla normal mode, vanilla hard mode, or current xpac tier hard mode. IN D2, it's a step backwards, apparently.

It kind of gives me the feeling that Bungie doesn't think the Raid Lair will be enough for the endgame, or else they wouldn't mind people moving on from Leviathan.

Well, a large complaint was raids becoming obsolete in Destiny 1, even though I was used to it from other MMO-type games.

So maybe it's figured on the spreadsheets that the labor cost of sustaining the HM raid continually gets paid for with expansion dollars.

This is me just armchairing - I completely understand people not wanting to pay to play the hard mode of a launch raid, but keeping raids relevant to the endgame means continual labor to keep them sustained. I don't think Bungie is doing this just to spite people into buying the expansions.

They really did fork development at the worst possible time (reply)

Rise of Iron fixed so many things that D2 misses at launch. I love what the art direction is doing, but the design decisions are... lacking.

TTK was the pinnacle of D1 for me. Best PvP sandbox, by far the most interesting patrol zone, and a good story. I thought it set the bar, but apparently it was just a one-off.

Easy. They're addressing the constant complaints. (reply)

The ones about bringing raids forward.

I considered this "fixed" in Year 3 destiny: the normal and heroic difficulties for older raids remained as they were at launch, and Bungie added higher-level variants as desired to their difficulty selection screen. Old customers got to keep what they purchased, and were still enticed to subscribe to the new content.

Lock behind the DLC (reply)

It's nice to have Prestige mode remain just as difficult, because what's the point in completing it if you overlevel? However, locking non-DLC people out of it is awful and a serious error.

It's becoming clear that D2 was pretty poorly planned out in a lot of ways, and that the idea of abandoning D1 so that updating D2 would be easier has not panned out at all.

Sure, client side patches are hard. So why wouldn't you build in a server side armor/weapon/e-mote restriction ability for when things are inevitably broken?

Lock behind the DLC

The reporting of the prestige raid now being unplayable if you don’t buy the DLC is gaining traction.

I am honestly asking this because I can’t see a reason, but what legitimate reason would there to do this? From where I’m standing it’s a straight up dick move.

Why can’t all the requirements stay the same for those who don’t buy the DLC? Is it that hard to not change it? Is the issue with DLC and non DLC people playing together? Either don’t let them play together, or have the activity level be set by the fire team leader. Why is that hard?

I’m genuinely curious as to why this had to be done. Dark Below didn’t lock you out of Hard mode VoG.
