Gravity (reply)

Some movies use 3d as a gimmick. This isn't one of them.

That's partly because the vast majority of movies are shot in 2D and then the 3D effect is faked in post.

Hmmm... looks like this one was too. But long, wide shots and lots of CG make it feel more natural I imagine.

Just saw it (reply)

To be fair, the term "IMAX" means relatively little these days. Digital IMAX is often just two 2K projectors used together to get a normal-theater-quality image onto a slightly larger screen without it winding up too dim.
Actual IMAX is awesome.

This pains me to no end. If you're going to pay the premium, at least get the real thing. I have no idea why IMAX is diluting their brand, because even on their webpage they list fake imax theatres under the find a location section.

If the screen is not 100 feet tall and it's not projecting real 65mm imax film (or the digital equivalent 8K), you aren't seeing it for real.

What a wonderful film. I'm going to enjoy processing it. "Don't let go." Goes deeper than I thought. And that music is just coursing through me.

I saw it in "IMAX 3D" in a normal (nice) theater and Cody's right about that being a dilution of the IMAX brand. It was still good, but it wasn't IMAX, not even close. What bugged me most, though, were the shitty glasses they make you wear. I'd actually be inclined to see more 3D movies if I had a nice pair of comfortable, clear, well-made 3D glasses. It makes a huge difference.

Space and Sci Fi (reply)

As a kid I was really into space. Everybody else was interested in Dinosaurs (especially with Jurassic Park coming out), but I loved the planets, stars and Galaxies. I thought that one day I'd be able to explore them, and that eventually humanity would be able to take themselves out into the universe for discovery.

I wanted to be an astronaut so badly.

I'd say the majority of Sci-Fi views space this way: as adventurous, as a frontier for discovery. Certainly Destiny will. Hop on a ship, and you're on Titan. Ain't no thang.

Much rarer is the view of space that I reluctantly have to agree with being correct: It's desolate. Unexplorable by man. Inhospitable. Deadly. Terrifying. A prison really.

As much as I believe there is probably life out there, the laws of physics being what they are probably makes any contact impossible. Manned travel significant distances is impossible. When our Earth is rendered inhospitable in 800 million years, all of humanity's knowledge, art, culture and creation dies with us. On a tiny spec unnoticed in the picture of the universe where each supercluster of galaxies is but a pale white dot.

It's understandable why a lot of sci-fi doesn't go there. It's the most depressing thing about existence. It's one of the main themes of Policenauts, which isn't the first thing to explore that idea, but it was one that really resonated with me.

Maybe that's why Gravity connected with me. It brought that back.

Speaking of Chris Hadfield *SP* (reply)

That covers the trailer well. I'd really like an analysis of the whole movie. I had assumed that some of what happens in not really possible (traveling from one orbital object to another the way they do), but the one incident I mentioned in my post didn't make sense with my basic understanding of physics. I mentioned it because it was the only moment (for me, anyway) that made me go, "huh?" while I was watching it.

In general, the physics seemed very realistic.

Holy jumping up and down!!! (reply)

That was fantastic. Why aren't you going to see it right now!?!

I'm not terribly well versed in film. I sometimes catch new releases that I want to see when they first hit theaters, and how much I like a film is usually based on how I feel about the characters and the story. That all being said, I haven't been this emotionally satisfied with the entirety of a film since The King's Speech, and that movie didn't have the freaking gorgeous visuals on display here. If I had to pick one thing I didn't like, it would be Clooney, but I had even warmed up to his character as the movie progressed.

I don't even want to watch anything else right now for fear of ruining the wonderful taste left in my mouth, figuratively speaking.

That's bullshit (reply)

My boyfriend and I caught Gravity in the middle of the afternoon and it seemed like we were the only youngsters in the theatre. These old timers sitting next to us talked at the top of their lungs during the ads and trailers, reminded each other that Tom Clancy passed away yesterday, and "Oh yeah, Barabra, we gotta see that!" was their greatest, most dire concern when The Geriatric Hangover trailer was over. During the movie, they wrestled their hand around in the popcorn during intense silent moments you'd typically want everyone to shut the fuck up for.

Nope. Old timers are just as terrible as pimple-faced morons and they never bring candy for us.

I couldn't wait. (reply)

I saw it at a local, fairly upscale shopping center cineplex at the first showing of the day--1 p.m. The theater was about 1/4 full with people roughly my age and older (read OLD).

Had an aisle to myself basically and no one in front of me (with stadium seating that wouldn't have mattered much). I never heard anyone say a word. Never heard or saw any phones after the lights went down.

It really is a wonderful movie. The 3-D really adds to the experience, and not in a bad way. Distances are a very important element of the story, and 3-D serves that well.

I'm going to see it again on an IMAX screen.
