It was called retirement.” We’re all Bungie fans here!

That said, I'm not in love with the term “sunsetting” — it sounds too corporate, too pleasant, too much like your boss firing you with a slap on your back telling you it’s going to be ok — too un-Bungie.

It’s not just the contradiction with the 2014 statement acknowledging the company understood we liked our stuff, it’s the way it’s being presented that feels a bit like a slap in the face, not in the back. It doesn't feel like the Bungie Brand™.

And while yes, it will be ok — I’m not going to quit over it — I’ll spend less money and time on the game.

I learned to forgive D2’s inexplicable sins, the Tower not being central in the director, the too many flashing icons of things to do, the omission of SRL, the creep of Eververse.

I learned to live without the pretty rain in Venus of D1.

There is, however, one pleasure I’ve enjoyed in the game (and I am a minority here) in that I like getting the same legendaries for all three characters.

By way of a D1 example, I collected three Eirene RR4s, one in each element, with the same Faucon SS1 scope, same mods (Triple Tap / Casket Mag / Shoot to Loot.). This took a weekly Wednesday visit for many months, and I got the last one sometime before D2 came out. (I would have kept going.)

I’ve done the same in D2, getting three copies of the same frame with the same mods, albeit in the same element. Things like Menagerie and Forges make this accomplishable and fun.

This of course takes time and patience, but if these weapons are going to be retired, why go through the trouble?

The digital items that characters wear and use become part of their identity. They become old friends. They help cement our relationship with our make-believe guardians.

The enjoyment I get out of the game from playing with friends will remain the primary drive, but the investment I have in the game, both in time and money, will be reduced, and I wish it weren't so.
