I just got the following from Amazon:

Hello,

We have received new release date information related to your pre-ordered video game
in the order you placed on February 18, 2013 (Order# ####). The release date for the
video game listed below has been changed by the publisher, and we want to provide you
with a new delivery estimate based on the new release date:

   "Destiny"
    Estimated arrival date: June 30, 2014

Yup, that got me, too. The fine print on Amazon says this, though:

"Activision has announced Destiny but the release date is not confirmed. June 30, 2014 is a placeholder release date."

That would be roughly consistent with bungie hitting alpha soon, and a beta early next year.

It also makes sense with an original release date of 2013, but having that date pushed back due to the inclusion of next gen consoles into the mix.

Finally, I don't think Activision wants to cannibalize the COD market. A summer release makes sense.

I'd expect late summer or fall at the earliest, honestly.

I've seen a lot of incredulous reactions on the net to Bungie's statement "We're in pre-alpha."

From what I can tell, though, it makes sense: they've spent years working on the systems that will power the game, and they're just now integrating those systems together where they can actually play through the game as an almost complete piece.

With the enormous team they have assembled & their powerful new content creation tools, they could very well finish in time for a release a year from now.

Personally, I'm hoping for a summer release because next year will be my last "summer"--I'll be done with grad school the year after that.

I don't know what your field is, but I'm jealous - once classes were done (less than two years in), my graduate experience was year-round. :) (In fact, summers were BUSIER for me than winters, simply because of my thesis topic and the logistics of data collection.)

I'm in computer science. So far this summer has been much busier because of a full-time internship and the associated commute.

But if I plan next summer right, I'll have tons of free time, no money to spend, and lots of Destiny to play, right? :)
