State of Bungie Forums (Destiny)

Looks like the change to DBO was completely benign in comparison to what is happening at bnet:

https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/242827681?sort=0&page=0

Several forums are now restricted to those with Destiny accounts, and some to people who have gotten to the farm on Des2ny.

So if you haven’t made it to the farm on Des2ny, you are locked out of the ‘gaming’ and ‘off topic’ forums. This makes sense for the ‘feedback’ forum, partial sense for the ‘Destiny 2’ forum, but no sense at all for gaming and off topic. What am I missing?

Probably the same philosophy behind the Follow-lockout of Twitch channels, which implemented a "minimum follow time" before you could participate in the chat. What did that do for Twitch? According to them:

1. Moderator actions sharply decreased. Less toxic chat!

2. Follows went way up.

3. No measurable change in viewership.

So yeah, it helps cut down on rampant toxicity on any of their pages, which they're completely entitled to, since it is their own forum. The "off-topic" forum must have been especially toxic, but they'll likely reverse this specific decision down the road.

Just sounds like they're trying to cut down on the "Fake Amazon Review" nature of the forums due to Destiny 2 being a letdown for most of the vocal community, though people who don't own the game can simply download the trial and make it to the farm, which will boost registered user numbers quite a bit (and honestly, I think that latter part is one of Bungie's goals).

It’s just kind of unfortunate measures are being taken everywhere because of toxicity. I hope we can all be super stoked as a whole once again.

Probably because of all the spam.

Most of the forums have pages upon pages upon pages of #removeeververse posts--it's insane! The phrase "shocked laughter" came to mind.

I expect this is the problem. The forums are awful, always have been, but recently they have become actually unusable due to the users just trashing Destiny constantly, and not even anything with content. Like "HOW MANY PEOPLE THINK EVERVERSE IS BAD," and it's every single thread.

The Offtopic and Gaming subforums in particular have an outsized impact on the number of necessary moderator actions when compared to their active users. In addition, the vast majority of users already meet the D2 posting requirements, this is primarily a way to make "alt" account usage less impactful and bans more meaningful.

Bungie.net gets far too many posts to pretend that it is some backwater 2004 forum with unlimited accounts for each person like has been doing for years. Linking to the games are the only way we can reliably deal with the scale of posts, let alone the toxicity that seems to have only increased in the last few years.

Well it sounds like a great solution.

I think that eliminating upvotes might also help. Keep the sorting mechanism, but dump the visible numbers. That might eliminate some of the obvious pandering to get higher numbers. Kinda like how a lot of forums eliminated post counts back in the day.

Now, a lot of long time community members on binglenet are going to be locked out if they haven't played the latest game, and that sucks, but it's a necessary evil to try to keep the forums usable. Maybe they're causing the problems, but idk. Is there an account age override you could do on this? Like if they've been on the site for 5 years or more, the requirements are waived?

I'm actually kind of surprised you guys maintain forums at all. Why do that, when the moderators of places like reddit basically do all that for you? It would be much less burden to you guys to simply frequent large community sites.

It is fashionable to go on the forums and reddit and dump on the game and Bungie. Restricting it to people who have actually played the game should provide a small hurdle to the legions of internet junkies that just like to go troll forums.

These are pretty low bars to clear for the on-topic forums, so the only explanation must be to cut down on sock puppet accounts. The Off-topic part I agree does not really make sense, but really, having an off-topic section probably does not make sense at this scale. remnants of a day gone by.
