My Destiny (Destiny)

So I’ve been brushing up on my lore, trying to put some pieces together, and I’ve been reading this timeline: https://www.destinypedia.com/Timeline.

Reading it has reinforced a thought I’ve had for a long time:

I wish Destiny 2 was just an expansion of Destiny.

What I mean is that I wish I could still play D1 missions, travel to D1 locations, and even have new missions at those locations (I loved the Thunderlord quest for this very reason). I’m all for the periodic changing of systems and gameplay - as betweeen D1 and D2 - but I wish Destiny was just an ever-expanding world that I could continue to access and enjoy.

I suppose I’m in the minority on this one, but that’s my dream!

I don't think that's true at all--that's what most people seem to wish, in my experience!

My dream for Destiny going forward is a unified platform. To the point that I would love for their next big expansion to just be bringing all the old D1 content back.

I've gone back a few times over the last week and fired up Destiny 1. Just doing some patrols, running some random missions.

I love Destiny 2. It's really, really great. It's better game in almost every way than Destiny 1. But it's still missing some of the charm that D1 had. That's at least partly due to just nostalgia--I can recognize that. But I do think there's something about Destiny 1 that Destiny 2 failed to recapture, even if I can't exactly put my finger on what it is.

Dest1ny fed into itself in ways that Des2ny has never approached. There was a general rounding of edges (I hesitate to call it dumbing down) from D1 to D2. Enemy factions were simplified. Characters were simplified. Gear was simplified. Progression was simplified. The broader systemic structures of D1 that allowed people to engage and experience at various levels have never been a major player in D2.

I know not everyone agrees on all these points, but the way they interacted in D1 had a certain level of engagement which allowed, for me, the game to really feel deep. While there are some changes in D2 that are greatly welcome (Mods and Masterwork - while not reaching their overall potential - are solid additiona to the toolbox) there are other which have been a hinderance (Streamlining of subclasses, nerfing of abilities overall, simplification of gear, to include less perk variety and limited weapon identity - though it is getting better) to feeling like they have the same magic D1 caught. I think translating D1 content into D2 would be the best way for Bungie to strengthen Destiny as a whole, though I would, personally, also like to see them bring back some of D1’s systems that just feel better than they have in D2.

My dream is that at some point you can start a character, wake up in that rusted-out traffic jam outside the wall in the Cosmodrome, and play all the way until you get to the final raid of D3 or whatever the final chapter of Destiny is--all in one game. I should also mention that as you go you can switch to whatever platform you want, picking up where you left off.

Can confirm that it is an awesome experience. Especially when you replay the first quest and remember where your character started.

Unified accounts are the future, and I can't wait to see it all implemented. Hopefully Bungie uses their freedom to implement something like this. I can guarantee that they'd see a huge sales boost (and maybe I'd even buy their Annual Scam).

Bungie can do anything they want now, the best plan would be to merge Destiny and Destiny 2 into what is going to become Destiny 3. I think it's feasible, since the engine that they are using has just been updated to support better content delivery for destiny 2. they do have to retexture everything from d1 since it renders metals radically different in the d2 engine though.
