Tried my first Ascendant Challenge today (Destiny)

Junior said I should give it a try. “Sure, you can solo it,” he said.

I like the Dreaming City, so I drove over the Petra, and bought the challenge. I got no instructions or indication on my map. Nada.

I have a limited amount of time, so I resort to the interwebs. After a quick search to figure out how to start the thing, I get on my way through the lost sector. I take the special juice and find the portal. I’m genuinely excited for new-to-me Destiny content. Into the ascendant realm!

I tried. And tried. And tried many more times. I could not get past the initial platforming before it became not-fun, and I gave up.

I now know why it’s called a challenge, but I wish ithe challenge involved more shooting and less platforming.

Do all the weekly challenges depend on flawless platforming?

Do all the weekly challenges depend on flawless platforming?

There are some neat combat encounters in some of them, but, yes, they all have pretty significant platforming.

And yes, you can solo them . . . eventually. Even one other person would help you immensely. They're not exactly easy, and doing it alone on your first try is asking for frustration.

The challenges are about half platforming. Two that are focused on it.. Two that have some of it at the end. Two that don’t actually require you to do any real platforming.

Specifically, this week's platforming is probably the toughest, and extremely susceptible to the Hunter off-ledge-early-lose-a-jump problem

I'm always surprised at how much trouble some people have with the platforming aspects of Destiny. I think the pressure aspect of it gets to people - most of these jumps are not mechanically difficult, it's the consequences of failure that causes the problems. I always recommend trying to relax. Also, you can keep coming back to try throughout the week, so if you are too frustrated, just take a break.

If you’re talking about the one in the bay, I just did that one too. It also held no instructions. Bungie, you don’t have to spoil us, but at least give us hints!

So yeah, the platforming isn’t that bad relatively speaking. You have the advantage of everything going down. Unlike the Whisper. It’s all about getting a running start and timing your movement abilities. If you’re on the One, I can do it for you, since I bleed power rings. ;-)

If you read the text in the ascendant challenge bounty that you get from Petra, it always includes a hint regarding the location of the portal.

Thanks for the tips. I will definitely give it another try.

I’ve never been good at platforming. Maybe it’s the pressure, but I think it’s just that I plain suck. I just don’t time my jumps well. I regularly screw up jumping in non-pressure scenarios. Junior and I ran the Insight Terminus strike several times (he got several Long Goobyes, including a masterwork version; I got zero), and I lost count of the number of times I died from biffing some very simple jump.

This week, platforming is the LEAST of your problems.

Not sure what this means; the only way I consistently die in Cimmerian Garrison (this week's challenge) is missing the jumps near the end. In other words, platforming is the ONLY real problem.

Unless you are trying to time trial it, it is one of the easiest ones to complete, minus having trouble woth the platforming at the end.

Those Abyssal Champions are mighty formidable...I mean, I know it's essentially the Darkblade/Heroic Witches Ritual, but I guess putting them in that ascendant realm made them feel a lot scarier. I spent time killing the first three because of the bounty I had, but when I continued and they kept spawning behind me--that really put me on edge! Juggling killing enemies, dodging those wall-shield blasts and keeping an eye out for them made it a multi-tasking nightmare! And those damn Shriekers! I can't tell you how many times blowing one of them up actually sent pieces out to knock me out of mid-air! It was very frustrating.
