Bait and Switch (Gaming)

At this rate, if I ever had a child I'll never be able to buy him or her a modern game ever. I don't know if an update will infect it with shit.

How about we do a thing like Apple does where it clearly states "in app purchases"? In the ESRB description it must list if there are microtransactions. Want to add later? Too fucking bad, because updates can't change the rating or descriptors. In fact, the parental controls should be updated to allow blocking of any game with microtransactions.

Sad.

Been a while since I've looked in the Playstation store, but the Xbox store does include that "includes in-app purchases" disclaimer.

It is problem though about the possibility of adding them later. The bigger problem is how games aren't as portable now. Owning the equipment necessary to run them isn't enough future-proofing any more.

Exactly why the ESRB needs to get involved and require labeling on the ratings description.

I wanted to listen to what they guy said, but he sounded so atrociously annoying and biased that I couldn't tell if he was employed by The Onion or not.

That’s deliberate. His character (and real personality to an extent) is that of a smarmy and pompous egomaniac, mocking the game industry and its practices.
You either accept it (because his videos are often full of solid points), or you don’t, because it is extremely one-sided against the industry and any microtransactions (that he loves Warframe is odd, though, but speaks volumes about how he isn’t completely biased against MTX).

Not really. From this very video:

Free to play mechanics belong in free to play games

Warframe is free to play. AAA games are not.

His podcast is (was--I haven't listened to it in quite a while) is pretty good. He drops the act and just discusses the issues. I like Jim Sterling, but his character can be grating. I've stopped watching his videos because they're all mostly the same anymore, and it all boils down to "Look at this shit publisher doing shit things!" Which, it's important enough work I guess, but I don't need to listen to it for fifteen minutes.

Gitaroo man IS the shit, but FYI he didn't ask me at all to use that video. His loss, I still had the original on a hard drive instead of a shit youtube rip.

I mean, that's great he has good points, but if I can't stand listening to his voice for long enough to hear those points then he has already failed at getting his message across. Apparently he has enough followers that his message gets across well enough.
