The joys of early announcements

To preface my post, I do not mind at all the way Bungie announces things. I love the excitement and speculation that comes before we learn solid details.

That said, I was listening to Guardian Radio's latest episode today and they talk a lot about the hype of Destiny and having recently read Narcogen's post it got me to thinking. Bungie is awesome at hype. They really get you excited about their next project and make you want to know more and more information. The interesting thing I though about though is I'm never disappointed by the final project because of their hype and most people (Halo 2 might be an exception, but it wasn't for me) don't seem to be disappointed either. So what I realized is that Bungie is very good at setting expectations along the way and it's not so much marketing as it is transparency.

Yes I am aware of how ironic it is to talk about Bungie being transparent about their development, but I really feel like their process is fairly transparent. Think about it for a moment. Bungie announces a game and tells you about all the things they want to do with the game. Then they show more and more about the ACTUAL game through videos and Weekly Updates and you start to get a realistic idea of what the game will realistically entail. That way when the game comes out when you buy the game you know what you're getting.

Maybe Bungie will deliver what most of our conceptions about Destiny expect, but I would not be surprised if when we get clarification we will look back and realize where Bungie was coming from with what they said.

This post is mostly just for discussion, what do you guys think? Do you agree, is Bungie good at setting expectations, or have I just "drank the Blue Kool-Aid"?

Well, unless I'm mistaken (a big possibility here), the last few Bungie games were only openly disclosed fairly close to their launch. As such, while I agree Destiny still is a bit too concealed in my opinion, I still have hope they'll get there in time.

Remember the Bungie Weekly Updates?

Always some interesting tidbits to enjoy. Back in the Halo 2 development days, we'd see the updates on different websites too, giving lots of publicity to interesting places in the Halo fandom.

They'd always temper teases with actual updates and explanations. Bungie's always been good about this, though the updates leading up to Reach brought much sadness and disappointment (goodbye space squirrel! Goodbye multiple Guta appearances!), which I'm sure 343 learned from, since they rarely ever gave us anything other than BS rambling on for half a page in an attempt at charm that was all but lost since the fall of Hawty McBloggy... In my opinion, of course.

I really hope Bungie picks up on the vidocs again. Those will always be some of my favorite things in the world, and here's hoping we get a full developer documentary on the scale of Halo 2's. That was great.

I couldn't agree more, I was pretty sad that Halo Reach didn't have more in depth documentaries. I am fairly sure they'll have vidocs in the future considering they always have a huge response from the community and industry.

I miss the weekly updates a lot and another thing I miss (unless I just haven't noticed them) are the podcasts. Even if they weren't able to tell us much yet I would love to hear Bungie just joking around with each other and tease us with little hints. I used to love the days when Frankie, Brian, and Luke would be talking and then interrupted by Marty walking by the door and making random ass jokes.

I love how the vernacular makes it sound like reminiscing; a venture never to occur again.

Worry Not.

It’s coming.

There are still a couple things that need to be worked out first. The X 720 is no doubt one of them. E3? I would be very surprised if not.

It only seems like a desert because you are thirsty.

Is Bungie good at setting expectations? I think the games they have made are the answer to that, though this forum may be abit biased on such.

Oh don't worry I am aware :) I am ready for the long journey with only enough water to keep me alive. I expect it :)
