GameOverCast Corners DeeJ

gameovercast.pngThe crew from GameOverCast were able to grab some time with DeeJ during Gamescom - and they've included the interview on their latest podcast. DeeJ does a masterful job of deflecting all the specific questions while still providing some tasty content, and reminds you why Bungie's being coy in the first place. It's worth a listen! (The podcast is nearly 2 hours, and the Destiny content begins more than halfway through - but they're giving away a bunch of cool stuff, including a Tritton headset - so you might want to listen to the entire thing.) Thanks to radarhead for letting us know on our forum. (His post includes an iTunes link if you'd rather listen there.)

Destiny Updates Takes a Gander at the Thank You Vid

Destiny Updates continues their in-depth analysis with their microscope aimed at yesterday's Community Thank You video. Teleporting, energy knives, and more insanity. I feel like we've seen more of how Destiny really plays in yesterday's quick glimpse than ever before.

Speculation Saturday #2: The Fall

Speculation Saturday #2: The Fall

Ragashingo continues his weekly tradition (cereal, cartoons, AND wild speculation - how could Saturdays get better?) with a new focus: the why and wherefores of the Solar System's infamous fall after the Golden Age (which was last week's focus). Go read his posts to get caught up on the facts and some of his own interpretations and then jump in on the fun yourself!

Edge has posted another developer interview with a Destiny team member - this time, it's Joe Staten, and the topic of conversation is how the game will bring worlds to life for you. Pretty interesting read! Thanks, Mr Danger.

You Don't Have to Go Home...

closing_time_desktop.jpg

There is a new Destiny Drawing Board article up on Bungie.net today. This week's lens scopes in on Closing Time, the sniper rifle we first got a glimpse of in the E3 presentation, even though we didn't know its name at the time. This long rifle is apparently a testament to Destiny's modern graphics engine, so go check out the article to find out why and be sure to nab some beautiful wallpaper while you're at it!

Big Entertainment

Pete Parsons spoke to GamesIndustry International - it's a great interview for showing how high Bungie is shooting with this IP. They're not planning to build the next game - they're planning to build the next DECADE of games, and they're pretty excited about it. (Our forum is a bit skeptical, all told - but maybe that's healthy. Make 'em earn that respect!)

Inside Gaming talks to Urk

insidegamingextended.jpgAnother interview recorded at Gamescom has surfaced (thanks, Xenos) - the crew at Inside Gaming took some time to talk to Eric Osborne about the crowd-pleasing awesomeness of Destiny (340,000 attendees at Gamescom this year, baybee), and what should be lighting your fire. Definitely worth a watch!

Speculation Saturday #1: The Golden Age

Destiny is a universe filled with mysteries for us to uncover, but why wait for the game to release to start unraveling the unknown? Ragashingo put together a speculation thread that takes a closer look at our mysterious past - grab your deerstalker hat and join in on the conversation!

A Wolf a Day Keeps the Fallen Away

Gjallarhorn

The second entry in Bungie's new Destiny Drawing Board series is up today with a feature on Gjallarhorn, everybody's favorite wolf-themed, rocket-flinging dealer of doom and destruction. I get the sense that this piece of heavy equipment is as destructive as it is ornate.

Destiny Drawing Board: Red Death

Red DeathBungie today kicked off a new Bungie.net feature they're calling Destiny Drawing Board by profiling an exotic pulse rifle named Red Death. And what an apt name it is, this thing just looks visceral!

We get a gorgeous wallpaper, some nice background about the history of the weapon and its development, and a sneak peek at what it'll look like in-game for those Guardians lucky enough to win it from their enemies.

I'm definitely looking forward to more entries in this series! (Thanks, Grim IV).

David Helsby: Treasure Hunter, Longshoreman, Animator

breaking_in_David_Helsby.jpg

We all know Destiny is going to have a plethora of weapons in a wide range of shapes and sizes, but it's easy to forget that each firearm needs a carefully crafted reload animation (or at least a cooldown sequence). David Helsby is a member of the Bungie team responsible for creating first-person animation for Destiny, and he sat down with DeeJ to discuss his unconventional work history (and how that lead to him Breaking In), his Unicorn-enabled commute, and the intricacies of a melee animation. Give it a read!

More Memory Equals More Notes

Game Industry published on article on the next generation of video game music - composers Jesper Kyd, Jason Graves and Bungie's Martin O'Donnell, best known for composing the Mr. Clean jingle, share their thoughts on the evolution and future of video game music. Thanks, Xenos.

Becoming the Hunter

Special effects guru Karin Olava teased us with her work-in-progress Hunter costume. What's even more impressive is that she built the costume from scratch using only reference shots. As someone who dabbles in costume building and currently has a Hunter banner staring me in the face, I couldn't be more envious of her incredble work. You can check out more of her work on her Instagram page.

Sloping the Floor

edge.png

Xenos pointed out a short article over at Edge that touches on Bungie's desire to counter trolls in Destiny's online interactions. While the piece is low on actual details, there are a few quotes from Chris Butcher that should be interesting to anyone that has rhythmically crouched over a fallen enemy in Halo...

Liz Bergeron: Hive Destroyer, Ridiculously Good Cook

You're creeping through the dark, musty tunnels of the decrepit Cosmodrome wall when you come upon a pack of Fallen Vandals. Expertly tossing a grenade at their feet, you raise your rifle and unleash a harsh staccato of gunfire... but the creatures do not acknowledge your bluster. One of them walks headfirst into a wall. Enemy AI is a complex system with a lot of room for glitches, and Liz Bergeron's job as Lead Combatants Tester is to make sure you never see it borked. Read the latest Breaking In article to see how she puts Destiny's hostiles through their paces!

Wesley Olson

Ground bacon, candied bacon, maple bacon. Did that get your attention? If so, you might enjoy the latest Baconing In-- er, Breaking In article over at Bungie.net. DeeJ grills new hire Wesley Olson on his hiring experience, his personal hobbies, and his knack for setting up PlayStation dev kits. There's plenty to chew on here, so check it out! (Thanks, bacon.)

Previewin' on the Edge

Edge cover

We already knew that Issue #257 of Edge magazine would have a Destiny cover story, but now we have a better idea of what to expect from the feature:

With exclusive access to the Seattle studio’s next blockbuster, we have the world’s first hands-on report on the openworld shooter, plus insight from Bungie creative lead Joe Staten, COO Pete Parsons, art director Chris Barrett, technical art director Ryan Ellis and technical director Chris Butcher.

As kapowaz points out, there's a quick teaser online featuring two paragraph-sized quotes from Joe Staten about what Bungie learned from ten years of making Halo games. Good news for people the like long story arcs! The Edge issue will be available for purchase starting this Thursday.

Making the Technology Disappear

Headlines utterly destroyed by X360

X360

Issue 100 of the independent UK magazine "X360" prominently features Destiny on the cover - complete with an absurdly sensationalist headline! The main article within covers the usual post-E3 details (which won't be new to most DBO readers), but the interview with Harold Ryan provide some interesting quotes, at least. This issue is on sale in both print and digital forms from the X360 website. (As always, please refrain from posting scans of paid material on our forum.)
