TTL Bjorni was able to experience the latest Destiny goodness first-hand, at Gamescom this week - and he wrote up his experience at Tied the Leader. There are even some codes from the trading cards Bungie was distributing (though I'm not sure what you're supposed to do with them). Go live vicariously! (Then tell him what you thought on our forum.)
There is a fresh infusion of fan fiction today. WM continues with Chapter Four in The Vanguards of Dead Orbit series, and kemachiro adds the next part in A Hunter's Journey. PerseusSpartacus then sets the stage for Destiny with Revival of the Past. Go read!
With the summer busyness, I've been neglecting the fan fiction queue, but I just released five new stories from storytime limbo. Ragashingo submitted a piece called These Imaginative Boots, kemachiro wrote the first part of A Hunter's Journey, and WM has turned in the first three chapters of The Vanguards of Dead Orbit ( 1 | 2 | 3 ). Grab a cup of coffee and enjoy!
Xenos pointed out a short blurb on CVG that highlights two quotes from Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg, who mentioned Destiny during an Activision-Blizzard earnings call earlier today:
We strongly believe we are on pace to set the all-time pre-order record for a new IP. [...] Based on what we've seen we believe that Destiny has the potential to become the third active billion dollar franchise in the Activision Publishing portfolio.
Whoa. Hopefully Activision remembers to be nice to the goose!
Voting has opened up for the Destiny Movie Poster contest that started with last week's mail sack. Head over to this gallery on the Bungie Facebook page and cast your vote with a "Like" on the image of your choosing. Be sure to revisit the contest thread if you'd like to see all of the entries!
The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences has posted a very brief interview with Bungie artist Jaime Jones, whose piece "Back from the Wild" was included in the "2013 Into the Pixel" collection. Go read about his influences and advice!
After sifting through the multitude of entries in each image-based Bungie Day challenge, DeeJ has prepared a colorful gallery of finalists for your viewing pleasure. The winners are still being picked by Team Bungie, but in the meantime you can go see what made the first cut!
The third and final part of Ryan McCaffrey's interview with Jason Jones is now available over on IGN. Today's discussion covers the lack of replay incentives in Halo, sheds some light on the ill-fated Phoenix project, gives us a few more hints at what we'll be experiencing in Destiny, and ends in a bit of a cliffhanger! If you missed the first and second parts of the interview, be sure to check those out first.
Ryan McCaffrey asks Jason Jones about his 17-point design philosophy, his personal gaming habits, and the biggest gamble of his career in Part Two of IGN's interview with the humble co-founder of Bungie. If you haven't read Part One yet, be sure to start with that. Part Three will conclude the interview tomorrow morning.
Bungie Day is here, heralding the midpoint of Bungie Week, and with it comes a handful of short-fuse contests on the Bungie.net forum. Time is short - the deadline for submissions is TODAY. (Presumably midnight Pacific time, though you might be able to squeak by with an overnight entry.) Submissions will be judged by DeeJ's fellow employees, and each winner will receive a Destiny poster signed by Team Bungie. There are seven contests to enter, so visit the threads below for details on how to craft something legendary for each one:
If you were hoping for more on Bungie Day Actual, keep in mind that this year the festivities have been stretched to fill an entire Bungie Week:
Though today may be Bungie Day in the traditional sense, the event will continue beyond the Se7enth. And that is the Tru7h. Our celebration continues tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow.
Comforting words from Bungie.net! (Thanks, MrPadraig08.)
Bungie Week is in full stride, and IGN's Ryan McCaffrey has joined the celebration with Part One of his three-part interview with mythic Bungie co-founder Jason Jones. (Parts Two and Three will go live on Monday and Tuesday, so be sure to check back then for more of the story.) The article is a fascinating read, touching on Jason's role in the day-to-day operation of his growing company and how he approaches the design of a project as ambitious as Destiny. Discussion briefly moves to the legendary story of the Halo CE pistol and how Jason added some last-minute code to turn it into the deadly handcannon we love and fear. Blam! (Thanks, marmot 1333.)
Ragashingo decided to do a frame by frame analysis of the Destiny E3 demo - he provides a great deal of interesting speculation regarding story and gameplay. Join in on the conversation!
From IGN's Ryan McCaffrey earlier today:
Sunday's a busy day this week... but we'll make time for this. You should, too! (Thanks, Mr Daax.)
This puts it in pretty rarified company: only Watch Dogs (with 5 nominations) and Titanfall (with 6, a GCA record) were as honored. Winners will be announced next Tuesday, July 2.
The Mirror, a news outlet from the UK, talked to Pete Parsons during E3 - the quotes they pulled out show that Bungie is really looking at the long term picture with this one. There's no "wow, this game was a success - I guess we should make a sequel!" this time around - they've already got their roadmap. Strap in!
Andrew Goldfarb over at IGN has posted a short interview with Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg that gives us this tantalizing quote about Destiny:
It’s a sizeable investment. It’s probably one of the biggest investments in a new IP that’s ever been made in this industry. We wouldn’t be making that investment if we didn’t believe in the potential.
Exciting words for Bungie fans. Check out the full article for Hirshberg's thoughts on how Destiny and Call of Duty will (or won't) compete with each other for an audience.
ncsuDuncan, GrimBrother One and Bed Errera sum up their E3 2013 experiences. My only question is, what exactly does Claude need to build up before Destiny comes out?
Pete Parsons spoke to Polygon at E3 (we missed the video - the Destiny segment starts around 30:50 or so.) He discusses loot streams, weapons, ranks, and more. Go watch!
UK's The Guardian has an interview with Pete Parsons - it's a fantastic read. Pete's not divulging secrets that Bungie wants kept right now, but he IS discussing some of the bigger issues people are curious about. You'll still have questions after you read it, but you can rest easier knowing that your interests are their interests, too. Thanks, Xenos.
Polygon has posted a short report on Activision's presence at the Licensing Expo in Las Vegas and the last paragraph provides an amusing juxtaposition:
This year the company pulled off the golden dream of all licensing agents, a Happy Meal deal with fast-food giant McDonalds. Activision says its big priority for the coming year is tying up some deals for its new franchise, Destiny.
Obviously the two sentences are unrelated, but I wouldn't mind seeing the Hamburglar outclassed by the might of a Fallen captain. What kind of licensing deals will we see emerge from the Destiny universe?
Dean Takahasi, writer for Venturebeat, shared his thoughts one Destiny's E3 reveal. He has a lot of positive things to say, but he also expected a little more from Bungie.
This is one of the tough things about operating an MMO. The technology will eventually start lagging behind single-player games. And when that happens, the MMO has to have its hooks in its players, or it will lose them. I don’t see the hooks yet for Destiny. They might be there, but Bungie has to show them.
Space magic, Dean… space magic.
DBO member spooky6 posed an interesting question on our forums regarding how people play games, specifically in a truer "role-playing" fashion, and how this might take place in Destiny. Some interesting discussion has taken place, and we'd love for you to join in. Go look!
