I used a badger CCL for a while before I got Timur's Lash. As long as the impact is pretty high it's not too bad. As long as your teammates have up close and personal relatively covered you can focus on trimming down the next incoming wave.
Also, a select few scout rifles (fang of ir yut comes to mind) don't suck nearly as bad as you'd think at close range, firing from the hip.
