Random items for silver (Destiny)

I simply cannot believe that Bungie is going to offering emote packs and sparrows for silver whose contents are random. For real money. Are they serious? If you pay money you should get to pick. Absurd!

Instead of adding to the collection of buyable emotes, old ones are going away. Why? That's dumb. Oh I see, because you can buy legacy emote packs with random contents. So you know, get them now if you want a sure thing!

The manipulation and exploitation is becoming embarrassingly transparent, and now it's not just your time on the line.

If it absolutely has to be one or the other, I'd rather have my money on the line for random not-strictly-necessary stuff than my time.

And yeah, the gambling appeal is ridiculously transparent. I don't see that as necessarily evil and exploitative, though, since it is ridiculously transparent and cosmetic.

Everywhere. Just look at any footage of people posting videos from PlayStation exeperience. Datto has one on his YouTube channel for example that goes over the new stuff you can buy with silver.

Couldn't agree more.

I just found out about upcoming $5 racing sparrow random package. We won't even get to pick our sparrow if we buy silver. And a $10 "book" paywall to see our racing stats. All this money for a 3 week experiment game that may not stick around.

The first random package to annoy me was the Blue Skeleton Mask that had some players dishing out $20-40 to try (and fail) to acquire the Hallows Eve Mask. Deej's carefully worded reply on reddit didn't help.

Cyber's post about the micro-transactions stirred up some frustration with Bungie/Activition that I've been trying to ignore.

I'm generally okay with the way Bungie has implemented microtransactions so far, but this . . .

The $10 stat book is the fucking stupidest thing I've ever heard. Yeah, I guess it's not necessary, but ten dollars to see my SRL stats? You've got to be kidding. I'm still going to play (and probably enjoy) the SRL, but that is a really big turn off from the whole thing.

For the record, I think it's hilariously bad as well, but it's another one of those things where the people who spend money on it are the ones who didn't have any sense in the first place.

I miss Cyber, and I miss playing with him (I know you're reading this) but so far, out of the majority of folks that got all worked up about Bunige adding this kind of fluff to the game, he's the only one with the testicular fortitude to actually stick with his principals and stop playing the game.

Unlike some people.

I've only paid for the actual game and content expansions. That's the way it stays. All the little things they've added for money have been cosmetic or inconsequential crap, and in a game dominated by RNG anyway, I know I'm not missing anything important.

I finally turned the corner on this at this point the other day. While, through the miracle of apologetics, we can say that's it's there to create a sense of rarity or prestige for the old players, as like a reward or something for playing so long, I don't think that's the case. This does seem manipulative.

Hence, I ain't buying none of em.

But that is dumb, because then new players don't get to experience your full game.

Destiny should always be adding and never taking away.

Maybe not the greatest example. I mean, the answer is yes, but I was a kid back then, with no sense of value and using someone else's money.

Heh, can't say the same. I was using (or eventually used) my own money on 'em. :)

Trading cards of all my favorite movies, shows, games, and comics were the main things that I bought like that, but there were some card games and HeroClix bought back in the day too. I also remember buying a box of Star Wars toys once in the format stores buy them (didn't know exactly which ones I'd get inside, just the wave; sold the rare or duplicates online).

I'm not saying it's my favorite way to spend money, especially anymore, but there was an innocent excitement in not knowing what you were getting exactly (and since there was usually a wide enough pool of things to get, duplicates weren't a big deal). For me, it never led to some addiction or something. I wasn't selling my TV for Pokemon cards. And now I still have my binder full of cards, and I've found they're a great and easily-managed reference for art. I can grab a Wolverine card for example, throw it in my sketchbook as a bookmark and have a ref. for his costume wherever I go.

If I HAD the spare change, I'd probably still buy some card packs for various things from time to time. There's a guy who sells artist trading cards at some conventions - you get a little box of a bunch covers and paintings the artist of your choice made. It's super motivating to flip through and it's given me lots of ideas for compositions without having to buy (or store) a library of art.

I wouldn't spend money in Destiny like this, mostly because emotes, etc. don't interest me, but I don't see the option as demonic or whatever, especially since it's still just cosmetics. I WOULD buy physical Destiny or classic Halo trading cards in a heartbeat (and a paycheck) though.

But nah, not going to do it. The value proposition is just not there.

Now they have a game of a bunch of haves emoting at a bunch of have nots. I now just sit whenever anyone breaks out some expensive emote to communicate how it makes me feel.

Companies, money, etc.

This is pretty awful, but will continue until people stop buying it. Which will be never.

Why are you surprised?

by Monochron, Tuesday, December 08, 2015, 13:20 (3368 days ago) @ Cody Miller

This is a very common type of micro transaction. Random packs for small dollar amounts make massive amounts of money, especially for free to play games, and I don't think many people expected Activision to just ignore their success.

When micro transactions first showed up in Destiny it was only a matter of time until we got "packs" like this.

Not surprised at all. Just disappointed.

by someotherguy, Hertfordshire, England, Tuesday, December 08, 2015, 16:23 (3368 days ago) @ Monochron

This is arguably the start of what the naysayers predicted. The slope sure is getting slippery.

Not surprised at all. Just disappointed.

by Claude Errera @, Tuesday, December 08, 2015, 18:52 (3368 days ago) @ someotherguy

I'm not sure I understand this at all.

I still haven't paid an extra penny for stuff like emotes. I'm not suddenly going to start because they're bundling stuff in random packs, or to GET specific stuff BEFORE they bundle stuff in random packs.

It's only slippery if they find a way to make me spend money I don't want to spend - so far, they haven't done this. (Expansions? That's money I WANT to spend.)

NOTHING they've offered for cash - including the sparrow stats book, I think - gives you something that provides a clear advantage over people who haven't spent money.

As far as I can tell, the sparrow racing book will give you a permanent place to see your racing stats after the event is over. (I assume this means that B.net will only be showing racing stats during the event. Maybe it means there won't be ANY way to see SRL stats on B.net, even during the event... but I'll wait and see about that.) It's POSSIBLE that racing stats will not be accessible via API - but if they are, third-party options (like Destiny Tracker) will give you the same functionality, for free.

Until I know for sure that they've actively blocked DT (and sites like it) from this sort of thing, I'm not gonna worry about it.

You buy into what you want to buy into. If you're spending money you don't want to spend, are you really going to claim it's Bungie's nefarious psychological manipulation making you do it... or will you admit it's your own choice?

First of all, nobody can force you to spend your money. Except the IRS.

Second of all, just because you and I have never bought anything with silver doesn't mean that Bungie isn't pressuring people in scummy ways.

The end result of course DOES effect everybody: we're getting mini games instead of big cool content packs. I want to continue to fight the darkness and discover the secrets of the golden age… not make papers masks.

It's as though you're making the point that the course they've taken has driven development, rather than the other way around.

You can't be making that point, though, can you? You don't really believe that Bungie said "hey, let's stop charging bigger sums of money for expansions, but instead only collect for microtransactions... hey, I guess that means we aren't going to be able to make large DLC this year!"

Do you?

I understand what you want. Bungie has decided to go a different route. You've made your unhappiness known (many times). Are you going to CONTINUE to do so - or are you going to go play something else until they make something you like?
