Possibly no new DLC (Destiny)

From Eurogamer. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-12-08-bungie-talks-destiny-the-taken-kings-event-focused-future
Destiny's first year featured two DLC packs, whereas this year things are different. Can players look forward to any more story content in Year Two?
Derek Carroll: "With Taken King we are moving to a more event-based model - things like Festival of the Lost and Sparrow racing, which is our winter event, and then smaller events such as Iron Banner and Trials of Osiris every weekend.
"Rather than doing these giant, monolithic DLC packs, this way everybody who's an owner of Taken King can enjoy these things."
Funkmon's opinion: I'm not a fan of this change, but I understand if they want to get Destiny 2 out, they'll have to divert time from this game.
Funkmon's opinion: I'm not a fan of this change, but I understand if they want to get Destiny 2 out, they'll have to divert less time to this game.
I'm actually pretty torn.
While I'd love to see more real, meaty content . . . this new model actually lines up with how I want to engage with Destiny at the moment and are just enough to keep me coming back occasionally while not holding a death grip on my time like Destiny had for the past year or so.
I'd like to play other games, and this allows me to strike a pretty awesome balance for that, it seems.
I know time management is my problem, and others shouldn't suffer to make my gaming time line up well, but this actually accomplishes that amazingly, so I'm pretty happy with it.

Yeah, I'm kinda in the same boat as you. I really only come back for these events and maybe trials or Iron Banner. I would also rather them get Destiny 2 out the door in a year rather than taking two years because of a couple DLC's.

Yeah, I think overall it may be possitive because they can devote the meat of the studio to working on the next game. Or the next massive DLC, whatever you want to call it. Kind of surprising but eh.
Though I would love another Raid.... :D

"Rather than doing these giant, monolithic DLC packs, this way everybody who's an owner of Taken King can enjoy these things."
I'm not a fan of these time based special events. I was busy during the Festival of the Lost. I did not have anytime to play, I did logon to look at the tower. I was unable to complete any quests, so basically I got a bunch of spoiled candy in my inventory. The same thing is going to happen with the Sparrow racing. Starting tomorrow I'm out of town for 2 weeks.
They state that everybody who owns Taken King can enjoy these things. NO, we can't! Real life trumps a video game. If you make the events time based then you are screwing some of your user base. I've still got Taken King quests that I have not completed, which is fine with me because I'm pretty certain that they won't be removed any time soon. I'll complete these quest as time permits.
These special events need to last longer than a few days or weeks if they are the the replacement of DLC.

That is a big thing to consider for sure. However it might be that they are bringing the races back periodically. Also, the plus side to events is that they are free. DLC we have to buy.

It would be nice if they just kept them in the game.

Agreed, but listening to DeeJ on the Guardians of Destiny podcast, he made it clear that this first run of the Sparrow Racing League is very much an experiment and will be shaped a lot by player feedback in the future. I would not be surprised if Sparrow racing became a biweekly event like Iron Banner, though DeeJ didn't go quite that far.

So not cool

Destiny is a game about tackling enemies of the dark with your friends. Give us more of THAT to do.
If all we're getting are 'events', then wtf is high moon doing all this time?
As someone of reddit said:

Interesting. It certainly sounds like we're up for more smaller events but I'm not sure the interview really answers the question of what the next big release will be. Are we looking at Destiny 2, a full new next gen only game in 2017 or is Destiny always going to be Destiny and we'll get multiple more smaller events followed by another paid TTK style expansion?
Remember when the DLC was pilloried?
by electricpirate , Tuesday, December 08, 2015, 15:19 (3368 days ago) @ Funkmon
Thinking about the reaction here, I get the feeling that Bungie is trying to find one solution that will appeal to a wide audience. The DLC solution was great(okay, it was designed for them but not always great) for the passionate players. Pay 20 bucks for a bunch of endgame content.
Not actively involved regularly in the endgame? Well then you get a couple story missions and quests. That was wher I was with the DLCs, I think I ran Crota once, and never did a POE over 32 and still haven't participated in Trials. This also had all these negative externalities about breaking up the player base, making friends unable to play together etc.
The new system has a much broader appeal. These activities are available to everyone. Sparrow racing really appeals to me in that I don't need a fireteam but I can work up to high LL gear.
So bungie has kind of swung from this model where only the most dedicated players see a lot of value, to a model where the most dedicated players are seeing far less endgame content.
Neither approaches seem paticularly strong right now, and I'm not totally sure how Bungie squares this circle.

To me, this is Urk responding to all these 2016-is-doomed interpretations (from one QandA with a mutliplayer designer) with 'relax guys, we got crap coming, but we're not ready to talk about it'.
But hey, maybe that's just me. I prefer to look forward to stuff I know about rather than go cynical on speculation.

Having a new raid every few months sounds exhausting . . .
I loved doing King's Fall Blind. It was by far my best experience in Destiny. It was also two long weeks of trying to make people's schedules line up, and was a much bigger chore than I anticipated.

Much better than one per year.

Trying to look at the bright side...
by CruelLEGACEY , Toronto, Tuesday, December 08, 2015, 15:35 (3368 days ago) @ Funkmon
So my initial reaction to this news is mild disappointment. Like others, I was hoping for more substantial content between now and next fall. But in the spirit of not judging before we have all the info, I've been thinking about the possibilities that more limited time events might bring.
Back at the beginning of year 1, Bungie began what I'd hoped would become a continuing pattern of unique events rotating in and out of the game. We had the Queen's Wrath, then Iron Banner... and that's it. Queen's Wrath went away, never to return as a special event, and Iron Banner settled into its monthly rotation. I was hoping for more events on a regular basis.
So now we have a 3 week SRL event. My hope is that after its initial 3-week debut, the SRL will become a recurring event, similar to Iron Banner. Maybe 1 week every month, or something along those lines. Then, another month or two down the road, perhaps Bungie can introduce another event. And another a month or two after that.
Any single event on their own might not feel like a huge deal, but if we get a decent number of them cycling in and out of the game on a regular basis, I think Destiny year 2 could shake out to be a lot of fun. Of course, all of this hinges on the quality and variety of the events. SRL certainly looks like a lot of fun, but it won't be for everyone. Personally, I think that's great... as long as we get other, different experiences added over time. Campaign challenge-type missions (similar to the original Queen's Wrath), new patrol events, Year 1 raid events featuring modifiers and/or updated encounters... there are plenty of possibilities.
On top of all that, Destiny is of course a loot-driven game. If each of these special events comes along with their own exclusive sets of rewards, from weapons and armor to cosmetic items, then Bungie will have a great vehicle to deliver a steady trickle of new loot into the game over year 2.
All of this being said, part of me wishes we'd get a new raid and a few new strikes in January, and another batch of content in may or so. But speaking for myself, when I look back at TDB and HOW, the only pieces of content that I really enjoyed were Croat's End and Trials of Osiris. Those pieces of content, along with VoG, were all that kept me playing for an entire year. With that in mind, the idea of new events being added into the game every couple months might be a lot of fun, and more than enough to hold me over until the next major release.

The thing is, these 'events' are almost by definition not going to be anything more than little diversions. Think about it. If sparrow racing were deep, interesting, challenging, and a whole lot of fun, it would have a permanent stay like Trials of Osiris. It's temporary because it is not developed enough to earn a full time place in the game and hold our attention long term. Racing games like Gran Gran Turismo and Forza which can sustain long term play because of their depth and complexity cost tens of millions of dollars to develop. You think they had those resources for sparrow racing?
So between now and Destiny 2, we are going to get events like these, that simply aren't super interesting on their own. The fact that you might get a lot of them is no consolation.
Would you rather play 5 real games, or 50 mini-games in WarioWare?

Yeah, we don't know the final status of the Sparrow Racibg League. Bungie (through DeeJ) has said this first outing is an experiment meant to draw feedback. Maybe Sparrow Racing comes back permanently, or rotates in and out opposite Iron Banner, or maybe is a quarterly event with a new track added each time... It might even be scrapped all together! We just don't know yet. And, yep, drawing conclusions before it's even live is downright silly.

It's logic and common sense dude.
Deej was asked 3 times in a PS Experience video about paid DLC, and every time he deflected. If paid DLC is in the pipeline, it's trivial to say "yes, but that's down the line our focus is events right now". No affirmation at all. Because it is either not happening, or uncertain. Both scenarios are not outcomes I hope for.
"Rather than doing these giant, monolithic DLC packs, this way everybody who's an owner of Taken King can enjoy these things."
That's a quote. Do they not realize Taken King was so good because it was a monolithic content drop?
Also, do you seriously think that SRL is going to compete with any of the dedicated racing games available? That's delusional. It's going to be a mini game.

On the other hand you're talking about Bungie, the company that never confirms anything until they are ready. I remember there was an interview with a pair of Bungie employees after the name "The Taken King" had leaked for the 3rd expansion and they wouldn't even comment on it. You're being unrealistic and ignoring literally decades worth of past history of you're expecting straight comments on unannounced Destiny updates.
And yet, you anticipate the unannounced, uncommented on Destiny 2? What's up with that?

Bungie itself employees hundreds of people. Are you saying from now on all of them will be making mini games and holiday events and none of them are working on new Destinations, Raids, or story content?
As for Destiny 2, no, I'm not sure it is inevitable. I might very well be wrong, but it is possible we'll just have Destiny for the next nine years and it will change and update and get new minor free and major paid content without going the route of a new retail sequel. Bungie has said our Guardians will be with us all the way. One way to do that is to reimport then like you did with Mass Effect 2 and 3, but another way is to never change the underlying core product.
Look at Destiny's branding today even. Bungie doesn't refer to it as "Destiny" in official contexts. More events aren't on the way for "Destiny." We aren't playing playing "Destiny" anymore. We're all being marketed and playing "Destiny: The Taken King" which also is listed as version 2.0 or 2.1 or whatever it is fixing to be after the December update.

Or a multitude of other reasons, because you don't really know anything specific about their plans.
"Rather than doing these giant, monolithic DLC packs, this way everybody who's an owner of Taken King can enjoy these things."
That's a quote. Do they not realize Taken King was so good because it was a monolithic content drop?
Yes, that's one short quote from one person during a press interview. I really have no idea what their specific plans are from that. Perhaps we'll get smaller DLC that has great content but drops more often. To me, Taken King wasn't good because it was monolithic, but because what was there was of high quality. If they keep up up that quality and spread it out rather than in dense pockets, that seems fine to me.
Also, do you seriously think that SRL is going to compete with any of the dedicated racing games available? That's delusional. It's going to be a mini game.
As I tried to say before, the flavor and universe of the mini game is a part of the game. I loved a PS1 Speed Racer game as a kid - not because the racing was the greatest, but because I got to be Speed Racer! A mediocre Star Wars flight sim was better than a more realistic flight sim because I got be Wedge Antilles! I like Destiny's universe, so I like the idea of racing in it, even if its not as good as some other racing-only game. And the idea that other things are happening in the game world other than just shooting aliens enriches the entire game for me.
But you've condescended my logic, common sense, and called my notions delusional in this post, so I'll take that as my cue to leave.

This is absolutely true, however these things have to build on an already impressive core game. You can't do the little things without the big things being there first. Right now I think Destiny could use more story driven missions, and less mini-game.

I largely agree with you. Am I expecting SRL to be raid-level in quality? No. But I do think it will be a lot of fun. As far as it not being a permanent addition to the game, I chalk that up to lack of racetracks, not the quality of the gameplay. Having it leave and return every so often is a way to focus the community around an event, while also avoiding burnout.
But this is all theoretical until we actually play it. I'm looking forward to checking it out today :)

I think Queen's wrath is an odd exception in that it probably went away because it want very good / wasn't very meaty / had various loot problems. It just doesn't feel like a good example and maybe was more Bungie deciding they wanted to maintain a higher quality of content then it actually being an actual special time limited event.

The streamers on that fighter were really cool, though and I missed them terribly! :p
I don't think Queen's Wrath was well implemented either, but what I'm saying is that I'd rather Bungie had reworked it and brought it back as a recurring event, rather than drop it completely.

It's funny that nobody was complaining about it until they prevented you from getting shards…

Having more events would be good, though I tend to look at House of Wolves, the continued existence of The Reef and all its bounties and ships and weapons and shaders as what Queens Wrath became and really what it was always destined to become. Yeah, plans for Queean Wrath to reoccur fell through but I think we were always going to wind up where we are now. That, and it's almost certain that The Awoken still have a role to play in the future.
That's not to ignore what you're saying. Destiny totally needed more content back then. And a reworked and rereleased Queens Wrath instead of waiting months and months would have been a good thing. :)

I enjoyed the bounty/quest based missions from TDB & HoW, but I never had a reason to go back and play them again and so they've largely been forgotten for me. When I think of an expansion I remember the end game content, the build up to the end game is easily passed over.

Has anyone here PLAYED SRL?

I do like the old model, but events like sparrow racing and festival of the lost are exactly what makes me pop on destiny again. Instead of paying $20 and debating if it was worth the time and transaction, you can play vanilla destiny or just the new spice. It's a lot like what I loved about halo support under bungie. Sure, the map packs were a big deal, but 2xp and weekend events kept you coming back or let you pass them off no sweat.

House of Wolves: "There's too much stuff to do! I'm forced to keep playing! I want a raid!"
The Taken King: "I'm forced to play the Raid! I want more content!"
Year 2 Model: "A steady trickle of free content? That won't be enough to keep me playing! I want a raid!"

I'm not sure how hard it is to understand my position, and why you keep not getting it. Here it is:
I want lots of fun, interesting missions and quests to play. Destiny is a game about shooting stuff with other people, so I would like high quality content where we do that.
I do NOT want:
Low quality content where we do that.
Filler that is not entertaining or challenging.
Mini-games.
It all comes down to wanting more AWESOME stuff to do. A trickle of content is not that. We need big releases that have a critical mass. I am more than happy to just wait for large content drops that integrate into the fabric of the game. I'm not so happy to get 'fluff' in more frequent intervals.
The post oryx kill quest lines leading up to the raid were all excellent. We need more stuff like that.
There is nothing that sucks about this position. The problem is squarely on Bungie wanting Destiny to be something people play 'as a hobby'. Even back before the game was announced I said content creation would be a problem for that to become a reality. And look what came true!

Fixed that for you.

I think the community has already proven that is not all this game is about.

I respect that opinion. I'm sure it's very true for you, but Bungie is trying to do what they think is best for the entire community of Destiny.
There is nothing that sucks about this position. The problem is squarely on Bungie wanting Destiny to be something people play 'as a hobby'. Even back before the game was announced I said content creation would be a problem for that to become a reality. And look what came true!
Again, I personally think that this being a content creation problem is a matter opinion. I think that it's not going to be a problem. I believe that Bungie will be able to fill that space with content that is entertaining until the next big content push comes out.
I am more than happy to just wait for large content drops that integrate into the fabric of the game.
Really? Because so far I've only seen you complain about not getting it. Where's the "more than happy to just wait" part come it? WE DON'T KNOW WHAT'S COMING. The next TTK might drop in six months or nine months or twelve months. Or a full blown Destiny 2.
I understand your position, and I'm sure quite a few folks share it. Just acknowledge that it's not the only position, and not even the only valid position. Lots of other folks have frequently requested and are looking forward to more of these little events.

This.

This is good news as far as I'm concerned. A couple of thoughts:
The DLC model doesn't make much sense for a game like Destiny. It's actually a Trojan Horse subscription service; if you don't buy the DLC, I'm not sure what you are getting out of the game anymore. I'm wondering if they were actually seeing a reduction in users when DLC was coming out.
Personally, I thought the pace of the expansions was a little fast in Year 1. I only got to do the Vault of Glass the week before TBD, and felt like I missed out on some stuff when they moved everything along. I didn't get a second character going until right before House of Wolves, and didn't get my 3rd character going until right before Year 2. And that's playing 1.5 hours a night! I don't know how you guys consume this content so quickly. I still haven't even finished all the story missions in TTK on my main character, and haven't done any on my other characters, even though I've 'lighted' them up.
There's still so much to do in this game for me, more large expansions would just make me feel overwhelmed. And, there's a lot of content that was left behind that could easily be re-purposed. We now have Challenge modes for Kings Fall - how cool would it be to get Challenge modes for VoG or Crota's End? And Crucible continues to be ripe for more 'free'-type content.
That's the first thing I thought when I saw his title. I literally cannot read those words without hearing May's voice in my head.
