If it was faction rep, I'd be all over it. There's just no Vanguard specific gear that I'd be all that excited to get from a reward package.

Good point. The guns suck.

Mixing real money with in-game rewards is a bad thing.

Guess there is never a need to spend real money on Destiny again if I can just get those items as a reward later on.
old emotes dropping in a mystery bag is just a slap in the face to people who spent real-life money on those items.

Isn't that fantastic? Another way to obtain cosmetic items that doesn't require the spending of real money?

How? You paid money to guarantee immediate access to those emotes (and Bungie even gave you some free Silver to let you take your pick).
Are we really that upset that emotes become cheaper or easier to obtain over time?
Should we hate the folks who bought the Legendary edition of Destiny instead of buying it at Launch and paying for expansions?
Should those people hate the folks who bought it cheaper on Black Friday?
It's very unreasonable to be bothered by Emotes as Nightfall drops.

It is if you'd rather have coins or an exotic.

This is a completely separate issue worth thinking about. Should cosmetic stuff drop in only 'casual' activities? What type of loot is acceptable 'reward' for the nightfall? I think it deserves a look. I'm not unhappy that they can drop… but perhaps that they drop in place of better things. Crucible and Vanguard strike rewards sound like a better place.
Even looking at the past raids, the cosmetic items were mostly from a dedicated source and didn't take away your shot at anything more meaningful. You could get the shattered vault cloak from the chest for example, and you'd still get an exotic roll.

When coins started dropping instead of high-level armor, people complained. Then people maxed out their legendary armor and started complaining when they DIDN'T get coins. Just play the game, take what you get.
If you get an emote, be happy you didn't have to pay for it.

No, the Deathsinger could give you a class item, and no more. The exotic Chest in VoG could give you a class item, and no more.
Atheon could give you a ship, and no more.
King's Fall can give you shards the entire way through, and the Sisters can drop a class item, and no more.
You're flat-out wrong, as usual.

Not wrong. The class item and ship did not replace other loot. You could get a class item and an exotic / ship.

from what I understand, there will be no more paid DLC. Just these micro-transactions that support the live-team that is maintaining Destiny.
So you release these cool in-game items that are exclusive to a micro-transaction of purchasing some silver (even giving you that first taste for free). Then you start giving those same items away for free in reward packages. So now, they have set a precedent of giving away items you have paid for previously.
If they want to continue to bring in money to support their staff and game, then these items should have stayed exactly what they were. Because now that I can reasonably expect to get these items in the future for free (though slower and RNG based) I now have no reason to give Bungie money to continue to support the game.

But the financial model assumes a support base of more than you. I bought $10 worth of silver over lunch, for instance. As long as enough people find value in the new stuff (enough to pay for it) then it's a win for you since you'll get free stuff. And the way these things tend to work is far more than enough people find far more than enough value. I'd be willing to bet quite a lot that Bungie ends up making far more this way than with the player base fracturing Expansions model.
So, if I'm right: Bungie gets more money to fund development, people like me get new stuff early, and patient people like you get all the stuff for free after a while. Yes, there are slippery slopes everywhere but slipping down any of them is not guaranteed...

Plus, the "no DLC" thing is just an assumption, right? Bungie hasn't said officially one way or the other?

They've been cagey and have implied they aren't going to do more, but haven't stated it clearly. It's a possibility. I included the word in my post title, but most people are taking no DLC as confirmed fact, when it isn't.

And they have been fairly pointed in saying micro transactions fund the Live team, which more and more looks more like limed time events than expansions.
Actually, that isn't true

A recent Activision interview said the exact opposite, we should expect both more paid DLC and more microtransactions. I think the link was posted on these forums.

Eh? I'm happy with my Bring It On and Slow Clap and am glad I got them "cheap" by not having to spend elevenity billion dollars to finally get them at random. I feel special, not bad. Who I feel bad for is everyone who wanted them but put off buying them. :(

I don't know. As someone who spent real world money on a handful of the old emotes, I don't really care. I paid a few bucks to hand pick the emotes that I wanted and have been able to play around with them for a while now. Now that I've had a month or two to play with my new toys, there's a chance that someone could get an emote from a drop, but even then, it's pretty unlikely that it'll be exactly the one they're looking for.
Seems like a fair choice: Pay to get what you want now, or wait for the chance to get it for free later. It's pretty much the same game I play with game releases. Do I buy it now or wait for it to end up in the Gamestop bargain bin or become a free Games With Gold game?

Great! I'm never buying that shit.
That said, I think you're right about it feeling insulting for those who spent real money on them. Oh well. Live and learn. Hopefully they never buy any microtransactions again. But then again, as a tech early adopter, I don't feel bad when my $250 item goes on sale for $150 3 months later. I paid to have it first.

It's not much different than coupons
by MacAddictXIV , Seattle WA, Wednesday, December 09, 2015, 12:14 (3367 days ago) @ DiscipleN2k
Some people put time in to getting coupons to save money (people who get emotes as drops) and then there are people who don't use coupons because it's not worth their time to collect them to save the money (people who use silver) It's just a way to make sure both groups are happy. The only thing I see that could have gone bad is if you didn't tell people from the get go that this is the system.
Also, this is very much like DOTA 2 in that you can get drops or you can just buy the cosmetic stuff.
