Had a lot of fun doing SRL today. I really like the event, even though it's a bit limited in track selection.

-You can get high-Light helmets and class items, and the drop rates are high, so you can get a solid number of Legendary Marks from racing, and it seems that rewards are distributed evenly, no matter your placement.

-The quests and bounties are simple (even though the sparrow questline has nothing to do with Sparrows), and rewarding.

-The races are balanced; being in the lead means very narrow boosts, and missing boosts slows you down You also take more damage from the enemies, since you're their main target. Being in the back gives you very wide boosts, and as a result people are very close to one another throughout the race.

-The races work towards the Jolly Holliday quest, but be sure not to die!

-You can race with a full fireteam, so it can be a private game in the best way.

-There's a whole slew of event shaders, and some are pretty awesome...

-Three weeks seems like way more than enough time to complete the Racing questline for most folks, so it shouldn't be too hard to load up on rewards for all of your characters.

That's what an event should be like: rewarding, simple, open, different, and fun. It's a great experiment, and it makes me excited for future events. I even want to get Gold again to get the rewards on Xbox (and race with friends there).

We ran some matches tonight, and they were pretty fun. I captured one where I was lucky enough to win:

That shortcut at 1:00 is very important. It can completely change the course of a race. Be sure to take it!

Tidbits:
The intro sequence is a neat way to grab some screenshots, especially when wearing masks. :P
I also love the Horns that Bungie added. Hearing a group of different honks before a race lightens the mood, and makes me want ALL of the horns.

The Tron bike is awesome. The only other Sparrow I've gotten is the bright pink one that I got from the Class S license. I love the sound of all of the new Sparrows. They make the race sound like a podrace. I actually hope that we get to see Sparrows in a bigger role at some point. Maybe a Halo-esque run from an exploding cabal ship, Bungie? :v

I love the Warlock dusters, but it's nice to not have to wear one sometimes. It's a bummer that they don't have Light. Hopefully next time, eh? Ran most of our VoG run tonight with a racing chest, so at least we have the Year 1 content to wear our suits through.

I had a lot of fun with the quests/bounties, and was actually bummed that I burned through them so fast. At least the bounties will tide me over.

I'm enjoying this event. How about you guys?

Had a really rough time stuck at the Warpriest, so I decided to jump on SRL before bed to cleanse the palate ... SO FUN. :)

Only got to class-B, but already I'm liking the change of pace. One question though; where the heck do I get a horn relay?! I really want to keep my antique horn. :)

Also; screw racing outfits, I'm rockin the OG starter armor with a racing shader. :D

You have to break down a legendary horn (the first horn you get from Holliday does not count because you can just pick up as many as you want from the kiosk)

I figured it was a Leg.horn thing, but didn't bother to wonder why the first one gave me nothing. Good, I just got one I don't care about. :)

Shortcuts . . . and thoughts.

by cheapLEY @, Wednesday, December 09, 2015, 12:20 (3367 days ago) @ Korny

That shortcut is definitely the most helpful of the few I've found. It lets you completely avoid an incredibly sharp corner that I've yet to see anyone get right.

The other "shortcut" on Mars is similar, but it causes you to miss two gates, which really hurts your speed.

Speaking of which, your speed is COMPLETELY reliant on gates. Before I played, I assumed the only provided a short boost (or short brake, if you missed), but that's not true. If you intentionally miss a bunch of gates in a row, you slow down to a crawl and cannot speed up until you start hitting gates again.

This event is a lot of fun. The gear is decent looking (and obviously great infusion material!), and the Sparrows are neat. The Shaders really nail it for me, though. I must have them!

My only complaint is the limited tracks. They're great, but some more variety would be nice. I really hope they continue to do SRL and add tracks as they go!

Yeah, I totally agree. I had a blast but then I had mixed feels between wanting to master the tracks and being bored with them.

Where is the one on Mars? I figured there was one but I haven't found it.

IIRC it's where you do a little S-curve (left then right) and then jump over a gap that leads to a downhill straight and then a downhill curve to the left. Stay left to take the 'upper' route and you can jump over the S-curve, the downside is missing those 2 gates and you're coming at that straight away from an angle.

Ah, I did know about that one but I didn't think it would help that much. That S-Curve isn't that hard to hit correctly compared to the Venus map.

I'm glad to hear you're liking it, considering how staunchly you've hated race in the past. We were talking about how SRL is the perfected version of race from bungie games, and somehow without rubber banding. Need to get a full team of bros to make a not so custom customs night.

No kidding they can be close. At the end of that race the middle 4 of us all finished within the same second.

Handling?

That blue Tron bike is the one I want!

Question about the handling on the new racing Sparrows: do they feel different than the “standard” and “trick” models? In your video it looks like the new one takes corners a bit better than my Ravensteel, but maybe you’re better at braking than I am. :)

Don't forget to save up your "sidestep" maneuver (or whatever it's called). Point your sparrow in the correct direction during a hard turn and activate it to instantly change you direction without losing a lot of speed.

There are a lot of place where you can basically accomplish the same thing by actually letting of the boost and turning, then boosting again, versus using the brake and sliding through the corner.

Because of the way the gates control speed, you don't actually lose much of it by letting off the boost button for a short time.

Feels like a massive boost

Yeah, it's new original, and not just cobbled together. It was fun and I'm happy. They did a good job.

But I'm still stuck thinking about the opportunity cost…
