Telemetries for money?

Uh... Bungie? Doesn't this go against that whole "cosmetic" thing?

Not really. A level 25 boost does nothing but save you some time (at the cost of precious XP for your subclasses), and Bungie gave everybody one for free.
Weapon telemetries? You can buy those in-game. There is no advantage to spending money for them.

The closest to non-cosmetic would be the subclass leveling, which is convenient, but looks ridiculously expensive. If someone wants to pay that much to save a few hours of grind, that's their pastrami. I really don't have an issue with a level 25 running around with a full subclass and crappy armor/weapons.

The price is hilariously high for everything, so who knows what's going on...

The question is of course why you'd want and actually ENABLE people to skip parts of your game? Wouldn't it sound ridiculous if with Halo Bungie had said "We gave you 10 levels, but if you pay more money you only have to play 5 of them?"

You're not skipping things, though. Leveling up to 25 isn't going to unlock all of the story missions, or make things considerably easier if you still have crappy gear and weapons.

They're not letting you skip five levels of a Halo game, they're unlocking them all from the get-go so you don't have to necessarily play them in order. It won't be any faster to complete the whole game on Legendary.

Ultimately, what difference does it make other than helping someone participate in group activities?
A significant bummer for me when I started on Xbox was that I was locked out of pretty much every single activity because my level was too low. This removes that issue, but doesn't do much more for players.

Because a better solution would be, somehow through Bungie.net, flag your account with the highest level your character has reached on any platform. Got an Xbox recently? Well, your bungie.net profile has a level 40 hunter. So, when you start up the Xbox game, you make a new character… who can be anywhere between level 1 and level 40. Your choice.

Wouldn't that be much better? If it's a barrier, eliminate it. Don't just make the problem go away with money.

I'm not going to say that's not really a problem… because with a social game it is. However, if you look at TTK, you can pretty much play by yourself through the quest progression and reach a light level very close to what you need to start playing King's fall. Just by playing through the game, you are pretty much ready to go to give the harder stuff a try.

I imagine a similar thing is true if you just buy the game and are totally new. You can either play through the regular story, or use your level 25 powerup and jump into TTK. If you are completely new, these experiences are new to you too, and you should ostensibly enjoy them.

It becomes an issue, when like you, you've done it all on a different platform and just want to get to the good stuff right away. But new players aren't going to have that problem. I see it as a failure of design if when upon buying a new game, it's suggested you need to spend even more money to actually enjoy it.

How is someone who paid extra to level up going to enjoy the game more than someone who hasn't played the game at all and experiences it at his own pace? Does the game simply get more fun by throwing more money at the screen?
I see why you're against free DLC.

No, but that's exactly what he's arguing.

The bottom line is that if enough people feel that guns level so slowly they need to buy telemetries, then perhaps guns should just upgrade faster?

No... That's not what I said at all. I was pointing out that that really small market would really be the only one benefitting from your solution, which Bungie has hinted at being a platform thing on Microsoft/Sony's end.

They level up fast enough with motes that I often wonder if it's worth the hassle to walk over to Banshee to buy a telemetry from him... Pretty sure people won't be buying these bundles for those Telemetries...

The question is of course why you'd want and actually ENABLE people to skip parts of your game? Wouldn't it sound ridiculous if with Halo Bungie had said "We gave you 10 levels, but if you pay more money you only have to play 5 of them?"

What if the part you're letting them skip was heavily criticized and the content they are skipping to was heavily praised? Bungie gets more money and players get to the better content (and the multiplayer activities) faster. It's win-win... Except for the price.

The good thing,

by TheeChaos @, Tuesday, December 15, 2015, 14:00 (3490 days ago) @ INSANEdrive

Only people with a expendable income and/or no brain will be buying this (spoiled kids). Level 25 character for 30 dollars?! yesterday you could buy TTK legendary edition (with a 25 boost!) for 30 dollars on amazon. This at best saves you like 3 hours (less if you use redbull codes). 30 dollars is ridiculously high for what you get. I am not even upset by this, because this isn't really helping anyone "get ahead" of players who actually play the game. Its just helping some people get up a little faster, but don't worry they wont be anywhere but broke.

The more I think about it, its a good idea. It will bring money from people who are lazy/don't care, but won't affect the people who invested the time. If they got exotics or perhaps a 300 light character, that would be pretty upsetting. This is more a good laugh, for me anyway.

"Bungie" is adding these?

by Monochron, Tuesday, December 15, 2015, 14:06 (3490 days ago) @ INSANEdrive

I notice articles are always using phrases like

The developers at Bungie just added more microtransactions

And I wonder if Bungie is actually the one making these decisions. Maybe it's holdover fanboyism here, but I feel that if articles are going to start dishing out blame we need to dish it out to Activision as well. I'm fairly certain they are the shot callers when it comes to how the game is monetized.

As soon as I saw us all get a "go to lvl 25" item for free, it was only a matter of time before they started selling them. I'm a little surprised they didn't wait until the next expansion to do it though.

I have no issue with this product in terms of its effect on the game or other players. My only problem with it is that it's a flagrant ripoff for anyone who buys it. A new player jumping in has no idea how long it takes to level up in Destiny. Getting from 1-25 might sound like a huge chunk of time, but the reality is most players can pull that off very quickly. It feels like very exploitive pricing to me.

It's really just "pay to skip solo play". I'm sure that was the thought behind it, because the social aspect is the most addictive part of destiny.

I am (still) concerned with paying to skip "time in game", but I fully expected to see this happen.

I think there are good people in Bungie trying to make a good product, but I also think there are people trying to take advantage of what success the game has to make easy money, combined with the fact that many design decisions are hostile and disrespectful to players, if not demonstrating that Bungie doesn't really know what it is doing sometimes.

It is certainly escalating recently. My concern isn't that I won't find Destiny's gameplay fun, but rather I will reach a point where their practices make me not want to associate with the product any more.

Then again, where else am I going to go--Halo? Forge does come out this week..

Yeah, see, I wonder why people weren't nagging about that one (well, they were, but for different reasons). You paid extra to get an exclusive class item available nowhere else that actually granted you the ability to level up the new subclasses faster. Where was the "not cosmetic" outcry then?

(And the funny thing is that I got these items on Xbox, but their light was low, and the boost was negligible, so I never bothered to wear them. So much for that!)

They have the Life Exotic perk, so you can use them with another exotic. They can also be infused now. You can bring them up to 310+ and walk around getting more exp all the time now.

Exp = motes, and I'm always short on them. Maybe because I've been giving them all to the factions…

It's essentially a time saver purchase, and not even for the whole way to level 40. I guess I understand the reasoning, you don't want to spend 10 - 15 hours playing the early parts of the game again. But, that's just it, you're saving the most marginally easy part of the grind.

Until Bungie starts offering:

-Guns

-Perks

-Gear

for money, the game can't really be pay to win. Besides, saving that 10 hours leaves you 10 hours without practice on that character or their subclasses.
