Your best times: Mars (4:26.495) Venus (4:07.399) (Destiny)
by kidtsunami , Atlanta, GA, Tuesday, December 15, 2015, 17:59 (3361 days ago)
I'm heading back to the ole hometown for the holidays and am officially done with my PS4 and XB1 till 2016 so I've run my last race of this event.
It'd be fun to see some of the best times here at DBO and hear about some of your strategies.
You can find your stats at guardian.gg
My strategies
- never take shortcuts
- side-step through any gate on a turn
- avoid everyone to the point that I'll hit the brakes before a turn and take 2nd for a moment just to have a clean line through
- use the ability to control the speed of my jumps to go as fast as possible while having smooth landings (there's that part on venus right after the shortcut where if you don't pull up a little bit, you hit the ramp and "bounce" a little bit
- turned off the paddles on my elite controller as I was squeezing too much
Happy racing for the rest of the event folks, looking forward to see you demolish my times.

Mars: 4:47.131
Venus: 4:39.659
Strategy:
- Hit as many people as I can
- Take shortcuts and fail
- Miss jumps and crash
- Hit fan blades and columns dead center.
- Boost into walls and die
- use my paddles to accidentally jump off my sparrow.

I've improved a little bit. I felt like I was rocking it last night with lots of 2nd place finished & some 1st place finishes. I finally got 2 racing sparrows, and in some ways they seem much faster, yet the handling seems worse, but I felt I was able to stay in 1st place longer with them. I'm finally figuring out how to use boost to improve my cornering.
Things I've learned:
1- when to use a sideways boost to help your cornering.
2- staying on the ground helps you go faster, floating in the air slows you down (much like downhill ski racing).
3- the shortcuts work really well for me.
Anyway, how the heck do you guys get such good times?

In no particular order, here are some things I've found useful, that I think maybe not everyone has picked up:
Once you get a helmet that gives you pitch control for your sparrow, dump some motes into it and USE that perk! You get a significant speed boost while pitching down in a fall. Any time you go over even a small jump, pitch forward. Note that on some taller jumps, you can damage yourself or cause a "bounce" if you pitch down too much and hit the bottom hard. After you practice for a while, you'll learn which jumps that happens on, and just pull up a little before touching down. Especially use this right after the portal on Venus. I pass a ton of people during that fall because they're not pitching down.
Use a trick sparrow, and ALWAYS try for tricks on jumps. It really helps keep your fuel gauge full so that you can dodge more often. This is the real reason the SRL sparrows do well - if it were just a straight-line speed contest, Timebreaker would monster everything.
Speaking of which, DODGE. Especially when there's a gate right at the start of a turn. Use a line that would normally cause you to miss the gate slightly toward the outside edge, and dodge toward the apex of the turn right as you pass through the gate. This helps shoot you through the apex at the highest possible speed, without losing momentum from turning.
Hit gates whenever possible. Don't be afraid to use your dodge to line up. Gates can make a huge difference.
At the fans on Mars, just aim for a line going straight through all the gates. Focus your eyes on that line and the gates, and just stay aware of the blades, but don't really THINK about a plan for them until you're right there. Then either dodge them (making sure to immediately dodge the other way and get back on your line with the gates), or if you don't have fuel, just brake briefly. Braking is not as good as dodging, but much better than hitting the blade.
As far as shortcuts, they probably do give you slightly faster times, but I personally never use them. I just don't like that feeling of slowing down (from missing the gates). But you're probably better off doing them, if you make the effort to hit every last gate you can before going in.
One of the info popups at the beginning of a race claims that LB is brake for one of the sparrow classes. It isn't.

Right Trigger, same as any

Just be careful about doing it mid-air. It won't work and you'll roll and die.
I'd like to also point out that my main brake is stop boosting.

The only significant difference between your and mine that I can notice are two:
- You go under the arch in the cave
- You consistently pull off a solid lap on all three of them
My time obviously suffer from the second (gotta learn to stop pushing my boundaries...), but is the first point important?

My assessment and a question
by stabbim , Des Moines, IA, USA, Sunday, December 20, 2015, 17:40 (3356 days ago) @ ZackDark
is the first point important?
I don't think so. I've found that if I'm next to someone going into that cave, and I go low while they go high, we typically run into each other at the exit. I think it's just a matter of which way you find easier to navigate.

Then I should probably stop fucking up after perfect laps...

Due to my loathing of PvP multiplayer, I realized SRL was my best shot to get up to Crucible rank 3 (up until SRL, I had still proudly remained at 0 on all 3 characters) and get a Chaperone. So, I've been doing basically nothing but SRL every night since it started. Consequently, my times improved quite a bit so I thought a new post was in order.
I did get to rank 3, got the quest, and completed TLW portion. I'm now working on the shotgun renown portion which is actually proving more onerous than the rep grind. Racing was fun, but seeking out high-level majors is kind of a pain. Also I'm having to use shotguns on my hunter which is not how I'm used to running her.

There's a named taken knight at the first portal that you can kill, suicide, and re-kill to get that portion of the quest done quickly. Each kill is worth 6%.
(Also, not sure if it has to be the daily, but that's when I did it)

by Schedonnardus, Texas, Wednesday, December 16, 2015, 12:56 (3360 days ago) @ kidtsunami
I notice that guardian.gg shows your K/D for each race. If you die even once during a race, you'll likely have a negative K/D unless you splatter a ton of enemies.

I assume so

Here are mine (spoiler: decent but not great)
by Beorn , <End of Failed Timeline>, Thursday, December 24, 2015, 06:17 (3352 days ago) @ kidtsunami
Alright, I’m signing off for Christmas and I won’t be back until SRL is gone. (sadface!)
Here are my numbers:
Campus Martius, Mars:
XB1: 4:32.941 (fastest lap: 1:26.057)
PS4: 4:28.996 (fastest lap: 1:27.439)
Infinite Descent, Venus:
XB1: 4:15.312 (fastest lap: 1:21.980)
PS4: 4:10.675 (fastest lap: 1:20.124)
Not surprisingly, the PS4 numbers are better. I started racing on XB1 and then I eventually switched to PS4. Both of the PS4 records were set this morning while finishing Rank 3 and the SRL book. I found that I got progressively better as I practiced and the racing gear really did help shave off a few seconds once I got my lines down; I just wish I had more time with SRL (and more tracks!).
