Closest race I've been in (Destiny)

Crappy times, in absolute terms - but the closeness of the race was pretty amazing. (At least to me.)

Time between first and second: .02 seconds
Time between first and fifth: less than 7/10ths of a second
Time between first and last: just over a second
I'd love to see a video of that.

Those races are the best part of Sparrow racing with friends. Yelling at the TV trying to screw over the other 4 guys who are literally right next to you. One wrong turn and you lose!
However, I can't imagine it being anything but poop touching cloth stressful in matchmaking. I would love to see the pack of dudes go through the whole race together like that though!
I've never been in a race that close by a long way.

I didn't think to record it. :(
It was stupid-close all the way through, though; I don't think there was ever a time someone was more than half an emblem ahead or behind. Lots of crashes - every single one caused by another rider.
I was in 5th place for 2.8 laps, which made for big gates. 6 perfect gates after the fan, and boom. (I actually thought I came in second; it LOOKED like the guy next to me crossed in front of me.)

That's an impressive grouping. The closest difference I've seen was 0.005 seconds.
WOW.

That's not even close to a frame in Destiny
by ZackDark , Not behind you. NO! Don't look., Thursday, December 17, 2015, 22:06 (3267 days ago) @ petetheduck
How the heck is it possible? It interpolates frames? In atmosphere real-time?

Might be a silly question, but since destiny only renders a frame every 33ms, how can it meaningfully measure anything shorter than that?

Physics can run faster than the framerate or, more likely, it can interpolate exactly when you cross the finish line (between frames) based upon your velocity & heading.

Right, exactly. Just because the graphics display at that rate doesn't necessarily mean that EVERYTHING does.
Also, when you're doing something like calculating when something crossed a threshold, all you need to know is where it started and what its velocity was, and you can calculate the exact time when it would have reached a given point. You don't have to be actually doing the calculation RIGHT when it arrives to get the number right.

I'm sure they used this part of their hit detection code to determine when someone crosses the finish line.
No, this is close, .001 second difference

Best Part...
by BeardFade , Portland, OR, Friday, December 18, 2015, 00:07 (3267 days ago) @ BeardFade
I was in 4th going into the final turn and I cut inside while all three of them lost momentum sliding right. I wish I had recorded it, it was pretty epic.
I witnessed it
by Oholiab , Friday, December 18, 2015, 02:13 (3267 days ago) @ BeardFade
From the back of the pack, of course.
It was pretty amazing. UpNorth thought he finally had the win over Beardfade. Nope.

Looks like I may have been in 5th according to Funks video. Even more epic.
Here's video of the end of the race. *VID*

I honestly didn't remember all five of us being that close.
I do remember screaming "THAT'S NOT TRUE! THAT'S NOT TRUE! THAT'S BULLSHIT!"

That's awesome. It would have been hilarious if our audio was recorded from the Xbox Party.
Holy crap!

A plausible explaination for my loss
by Up North 65 , Friday, December 18, 2015, 14:57 (3266 days ago) @ Funkmon
After watching that video I remember swerving to hit a small bushy tailed rodent on the track. Given my current vendetta against the grey squirrel population I felt it was wrong not to splatter that little bugger all over the front of my sparrow. Did I it cost me the race? Yea but it made me feel a little warmer and fuzzier inside.

There are birds and dragonflies in the game. Maybe one of those hit your helmet visor and caused you to swerve like you did.
No joke. I spent a lap and a half the other day unable to see similar to when you get that tracer shank explosion on you. It sucked.
Holy shit, I had that too!
by ZackDark , Not behind you. NO! Don't look., Saturday, December 19, 2015, 02:40 (3266 days ago) @ BeardFade
It was like the web-grenade effect never went away and just increased in intensity every time I crossed a gate.
Holy shit, I had that too!
by cheapLEY , Saturday, December 19, 2015, 02:59 (3266 days ago) @ ZackDark
I've had that too. I thought I shouted at my Xbox to record that, but I don't see the clip so I guess not.

Here are some of my moments recently. And Yes, I know I"m really squirrely :-)
First off, the game I lost by .003 seconds in which we took turns riding on top of each other's sparrow.
Then all of the other tricks I can do with a sparrow.
This is my SICK trick I did without even trying. No, I didn't use any sparrow abilities.
Then there was the crash and burn that made me feel like one of those unimportant characters in ANY racing movie.
Last but not least. I have no idea what happened.
LOVE the sick trick. :)
