I Always get these awesome yet general puns, and this one I didn't. Fortunately I'm with relatives, one of which is know as the pun king because he just can't help himself from making puns in general speech. He had to guess at it. He gave an adequate explanation, but that just makes me think I didn't understand it due to localized English dialects. So now I'm wondering where Stuntmutt (and now Funkman) is from. So, where ya from?

So that my guess goes on record, the theory is that on Christmas lots of people stay at home in their pajamas, especially kids. For some (and especially kids) these are one piece PJs, that some English speaking places call "jumpers". Since none of them are fashionable and, when worn by adults, atrocious, that the pun comes from ad PJs worn by adults.

However, in my rearing in Washington state USA these are called exclusively "PJs" and are rarely one piece. If I hear that someone is wearing a "jumper" I assume it's a flight suit worn by a military pilot or astronaught.

I'm also a nerd and shouldn't be counted on for accurate accounts of style or social norms ;-)

That and Doctor Who

Basically everyone I know has one ugly, Christmas-themed jumper (or sweater) they wear maybe three times a year. Once upon a time it would be the unwanted gift from a grandparent and wore once out of politeness. Now it's kind of an institution though, with people buying their own (often intentionally hideous) jumpers and wearing them out on Christmas day, to work Christmas parties, etc.

It's mostly an irony thing, I think, but also because secretly we quite like them. Bonus points if there are stars, baubles or Christmas puddings convenientky placed over the nipples, or if it's 3D (a large protruding carrot nose on a snowman is popular).
