Basically everyone I know has one ugly, Christmas-themed jumper (or sweater) they wear maybe three times a year. Once upon a time it would be the unwanted gift from a grandparent and wore once out of politeness. Now it's kind of an institution though, with people buying their own (often intentionally hideous) jumpers and wearing them out on Christmas day, to work Christmas parties, etc.

It's mostly an irony thing, I think, but also because secretly we quite like them. Bonus points if there are stars, baubles or Christmas puddings convenientky placed over the nipples, or if it's 3D (a large protruding carrot nose on a snowman is popular).
