SRL -carving a turn - how did I do this? (Destiny)
This happened about four times yesterday. I was able to carve the the really tight Mars turn at full speed while hugging the inside line without using any side boosts -and yes i went through the gate.
Here is a clip of the last time it happened;

I cannot figure out how I could only occasionally do that.

SRL -carving a turn - how did I do this?
I could never reliably recreate that kind of thing, but I think it has to do with the angle your sparrow is at in relation to your speed. You're not "drifting" yet, but still going at speed and turning. I just assumed I wasn't very good with my sparrow handling so I couldn't recreate it. It would be sad if it were a bug.

The key here is the angle of your sparrow. Like when a motorcyclist leans into a turn, you were able to get the the bottom of the sparrow pointing to the outside of the turn (thus pushing you back inside) rather than directly below you (which would result in a slide trying to turn). This is how I take the first Mars turn. I can't think of how to do it off the top of my head, but it can be reliably done.

Is it possible that landing a flip temporarily improves handling?

I don't think so, I do barrel rolls on certain jumps to increase my side boost fuel.

That's the one turn I really nailed down. It's all about timing: pulling both sticks left / release / pull left / straighten out.

I wonder if you have a broken controller like mine...
My PS4 controller, when playing Destiny, turns to the right at 50% of the speed that it turns to the left. This is only at the extreme turn angles - basically turning right registers 50% of the force as normal, but never increases past that for me. During SRL, it meant that I had to figure out creative ways to make the hard right turns at the start of venus and just before the big ramp/jump on mars (pictured in your video). After 10 or so races, I discovered something weird: If I pulled the thumbstick backwards slightly from "true right," I'd end up turning at full speed. So instead of ideal turning position being 9 pm for left and 3 pm for right, my controller is more like 9 pm left and 4 pm right.
Anyway, it's a very specific point, which I can't reliably hit, so when turning right, I ended up wiggling my stick a little to pass through the zone of real turning vs. crap turning. The end result looked exactly like what you did in that final turn. Except yours is going to the left, which is a lot more prevalent in SRL because that's just how the race track loops are designed.

I need to pull back a little on the stick to turn more. Might be a controller issue, but I figured it was software.

Yeah, software seems likely since I don't have this issue with any other game, but it also doesn't make any sense that turning left and turning right are totally different, and you can only turn quickly to the right while also tilting upwards, but can turn quickly to the left without changing your tilt at all.
In SRL you get better handling the worse you are doing
A lot of people seem to think that this isn't true, but as an experienced racer in SRL I am 100% sure that the worse you are doing in a race the better handling you have with your sparrow. For example the person in first place has the least control over their sparrow and will likely have to use side boosts on turns, while someone in last place would be able to take sharp turns without side boosting once. Bungie likely did this to help the racers that weren't doing so well to catch up. So the reason you were able to take that turn without having to side boost is because you were in 5th place and had much better handling than you would've had had you been in 1st place and taken that turn.
