Lesson Learned (Destiny)
If anyone has played with me long enough they will know I'm a serial hoarder. I hate getting ride of pieces I've either earned or had drop with good rolls. The ever changing Meta in crucible makes me not want to get rid of weapons even if I don't like the weapon type for crucible.
Those year one dead orbit arm bands, cloaks, and butt-towels are pretty sweet looking also, why would I want to get rid of those? The cool festival of the lost paper helmets are awesome looking so I'll keep those too. I think you can catch the drift of my problem.
Let's back step a few weeks to SRL. I raced and raced and raced trying to get those high level drops. I managed to get a good amount of 310+ helms and a few 320 helms. The problem I ran into was I out of armor materials constantly while using these high level drops to upgrade my gear. In fact, I was lucky enough on SRL that I simply didn't have enough space to store these drops so I would pull one from the post master when I had enough armor mats to upgrade a piece of gear. I'm guessing you can see where this is going now.
fast forward to a few nights ago. I ran a full hard mode raid w/ challenge mode with my normal raid group. after having a few wipes during the raid, I started to get a ton of engrams dropping that I couldn't pick up. I moved as many of these to the vault from my character as I could. Well, apparently that wasn't enough. After we had cleared Oryx and went back to the tower I discovered that I had nearly wiped out my entire stash of 310+ helmets from the post master. I lost around 7 314-318 helmets and 1 320 helmet. Talk about a horrible sinking feeling in your stomach.
This issue is my own fault, but still... That was a horrible feeling to have upon seeing all of those items disappear because I don't want to get rid of items I've earned/lucked out on over the course of playing this game.

As someone who's had a similar experience, I sympathize.
I still use my postmaster as a second vault, but I'm very mindful about how many drops I can store in it now.

Lesson Learned
Sorry about that. I've got similar issues and I've had similar things happen.
You had fun with SRL, though, right?

Lesson Learned
I had a blast with SRL! The rewards were definitely a motivator to keep racing though. Just like playing Iron Banner, once you hit rank 5 its worth it to keep playing for the rewards.
Lesson Learned
Ouch. :(
I was kicked out of my home yesterday (they were putting in some spray insulation between floors, we had to leave for 24 hours), so I stayed with nico; we didn't have a ton of time to play, but I DID spend a little bit organizing my gear and getting rid of stuff I'm never gonna use. (It's good to have a non-hoarder looking over your shoulder when you're doing this, to ridicule you for trying to justify that third or fourth pulse rifle you'll never actually equip.)
I went from 71/72 weapons, 70/72 armor pieces, and nearly full 10-blocks on each of three characters to ~50/72 for both weapons and armor in the vault and 3-6 items/block per character.
I feel a lot lighter. :)

You'll just relapse!
I did the same to unoudid during House of Wolves, and look what happened.
You better move in with Nico permanently.

What's funny
Is now I have typically been keeping stuff as infusion fuel instead of keeping for use down the road. Some of the weapons with great rolls I keep just because, but a lot are kept for future infusion purposes.
Maybe I need to have you look over my shoulder again lol

Lesson Learned
i'm afraid to delete anything, b/c bungie always makes tweaks, and then a new power weapon emerges.
also, my postmaster has about 4 310+ SRL helmets sitting in it. along with the SRL record book emblem, and raid challenge emblems.
I seriously need to sit down and go through everything.
I deleted most of my year 1 gear. I kept my gally, and one of each raid armor and weapon drop for posterity. I feel guilty about deleting something that i had to work for, even if it is useless now.
The rest of my vault is full of stuff to use for infusion.

Lesson Learned
With how often legendaries drop in TTK, I find less a need to hoard even decent drops for infusion since another one will drop soon enough. Granted, I enjoy purging every so often in general. I kind of hate how easy it is to accumulate crap.

I need nico to look over my shoulder.

Let's have a Funkmon tells you what to delete event!
Nico said I should have a podcast or YouTube show where I give bad advice and go off half cocked on tangents.
Let's do it, except I tell you what to delete! Goodbye all those good guns.
On a personal level, I don't care avout what might be good or bad during the next phase. I know what I like in guns, then just keep a copy of those guns for when Bungie nerfs all other types again and they become good. Maybe try that.
Hand cannons: magazine size and range
Scouts: stability, full auto, magazine size
Auto rifles: range, magazine size
Pulse rifles: range, stability, magazine size
Shotguns: Crucible - range. Vanguard - full auto
Fusion rifles: charge rate, stability.
Sniper rifles: impact, magazine size, surplus
Machine guns: magazine size and stability
Rocket launcher: tripod and surplus, or for Crucible grenades and horseshoes.
No, maybe I won't have the best exact rolls in the game for PvP, but I know I'll be having fun the whole time and not just using something because its time to kill is lower.

Lesson Learned
No need to keep Gally, just buy it back from the kiosk if needed.
Lesson Learned: Bungie doesn't value your time
Sorry, but this is not your fault.
Bungie has made this game even more grindy than before.
I took a few weeks off from Destiny but launched it last Saturday during Iron Banner to see what the guy was selling. With a 310+ character, it is just not worth it to grind for 280/290 gear. I just closed Destiny and launched Battlefront instead. There's no reason for Destiny's light system to exist except to manipulate players into sinking tons of time into an aspect of the game that isn't even fun.

I know the answer is "everything below 290 light", but:

Hey, they gotta keep people playing till September without releasing any new content until then. Destiny is supposed to be its own hobby after all.

I want you to know how long this took.
I started about 2 minutes after you posted.
Note: your vault appears to be mostly sentimental. However, some of that crap sucked then and always will suck so you should dump it. Your armor mostly appears to consist of sets you think are cool, so I didn't do much with it. Also, I left some guns that are awful but worth keeping around to infuse later onto good guns. If I marked em red, delete/infuse now. You need to put XP in that full auto raid scout.

How does delete subclass?

I love that you marked his Titan and several subclasses for deletion XD

Delete characters and only put XP into the good subclass.

Yea pretty much the same here. I have just stopped as it feels directed, in an open-world "style" game that just doesn't work. I have been going Halo but same thing. I open it and I go why am I playing this after 1 game. I enjoy the game of course, I am still here, but it just feels forced to play, even after not playing for a while.

Hey, they gotta keep people playing till September without releasing any new content until then. Destiny is supposed to be its own hobby after all.
Yeah... The no new content thing is a fantasy you made up. Perhaps recall when Urk recently said:
There's a whiteboard in one of our meeting rooms filled with scribblings and sticky notes that represent the developments planned for Destiny's not-so-distant future. Events, activities, content, and features designed to keep you happy, entertained, and rewarded throughout the year to come: some events and some activities that will become additions to your Director.
The first of these early 2016 experiences will be on a scale close to Festival of the Lost. The second will be far larger than anything you've seen since the release of The Taken King. There's also another significant update to the world and sandbox planned in this same window.
It's true that we've updated the playbook based on what we've learned to date, and to better tap into what makes Destiny unique. Last year, we all waited five months and ten days between content drops after December. This year, the plan is to deliver new experiences at a faster clip. To that end, the updates described above are all currently slated to hit across Winter and Spring of 2016, with more to come, as well.

Wow, Funkmon; thank you!
Really, this is great.
Primaries
Similmar's Wrath, Her Right hand, Six Dreg Pride, Her Mercy, Aegis of the Kell, Skorri's Revenge, Payment VI, Hygiea Noblesse... Yup. Agreed. Burn them. These are crappy weapons I've never used after leveling them. I'm only holding onto them now because they're part of a set. I'm hoping that Bungie will add Kiosks for IB, the Prison and/or the Queen. When I really run out of space though, they're all getting deleted. I've already been considering loosing either the Queen Weapon set or the Iron Banner weapon set. Your recommendation to kill all of the Queen weapons save Her Benevolence is reinforcing that option (although you weren't much kinder to the IB weapons :).
Secondaries
You're not a fan of Fusion rifles, I see :) Not even a single solar FR to keep? At the moment I'm holding onto fusion rifles right now in hopes that Bungie eventually finds a way to make them useful, but the ones I have are pretty bad rolls and you're probably right about all of them. Except for the Arc Thesan FR4 - that's got a great roll and it's the only FR I've fired in over a month other than Telesto. At first I thought you'd nix the Tamar-D too, but then I remembered why I kept it - it's got surplus and you've been singing the praises of that perk so long that I've been keeping and infusing that sniper on your recommendation :)
Heavies
You're 100% right about the heavies. I'm holding onto those just to maintain a set, and the Ruin Wake and Objection IV you pointed out are just so I have an arc and solar legendary machine gun. I want to like Objection based on its perks (the vendor roll appears good), but I don't think I've fired it. Ever.
Armor
I've been thinking about ditching those hand cannon loader gauntlets. I'm only holding onto them now in case hand cannons become the Crucible 'win button' again. But I'm keeping my titan pulse rifle loader gloves; I still use Mercy/Spare Change/Hawksaw in the Crucible.
There's a lot of infusion fodder in the chest armor. I'm holding a solar/arc/void damage reduction chest for each character just for nightfall burns, but at this point it really doesn't make much of a difference. And the nightfall just gives me horns and coins anyway <grr>.
About those boots - I usually run machine gun ammo boots, but each character has an alternate set of boots with rocket ammo. Not that I play trials any more, but if I ever run rockets I switch to those boots and take the hit to my light level.
I'm keeping a lot of class items at the moment just as infusion fuel; I'm working on two exotic class item quests and the ones you marked will come in handy.
Artifacts. <sigh> The "gotta catch 'em all" collector OCD has been kicking in for those. Eventually I'll probably reduce to grenade kill and precision kill orbs for my preferred subclass element with an int/dis/str value that helps.
That's actually my reduced collection of shells though; I deleted at least 6 last night. I'm trying to have a kills=glimmer for each race, and a material finder for each planet. At the moment there's some gaps.
Sets and other:
Raid weapons are precious to me, I'll keep those sets for a long time. Even Song of Ir Yut and Swordbreaker.
I really should make a video where I delete all three Crux of Crota's while having my Necrochasm equipped, huh?
I use ships and emblems to remind me of my faction (when working on the exotic class item) or subclass (when not).
<emote>Boo!<emote>
Thank you so much, Funkmon. It's great having a second set of eyes on this, and you've reinforced what I've been considering. Let me know if I can do the same for you, but I suspect you don't have quite the problem I do in this area. I'm keeping my Titan, though :)

Thanks, when I saw that I was glad I wasn't mid-drink. :D

Lesson Learned
I used to use the Postmaster as a second Vault for all of the exotics that I didn't want to pick up (nearly a dozen). Then I spent an evening running a bunch of Wolves stuff before they went away and ended up with this:
Remember that you can lock stuff in the Postmaster to protect it from deletion. I realized that a bit too late...
We need more postmaster space, Bungle!

Maybe you could take this as a lesson in maybe trying to learn a couple of facts before spewing more of the trademark Cody ignorance... They have made multiple references to the upcoming events. SRL was clearly classified as their Holiday event, with a small gift coming to your postmaster soon (15 coins + motes) before the next event.
Lurn2Reed

On a related note...
Bungie started dishing out holiday gifts to players today, in the form of 10 packages in the postmaster, each containing a few motes or coins. Sounds like something that might be problematic for players with full postmasters.

Let's have a Funkmon tells you what to delete event!
We kinda did that already. I think half of us were drunk. lol
It didn't take off, is my point.

What!?!? Mind = Blown

My first thought too when seeing the postmaster

On a related note...
Bungie is trolling players. They didn't need to make 10 individually wrapped presents to the postmaster. But they did.

Advice from a (sort of ex) hoarder (long)
I try and keep around 10 slots open on my vault in weapons and armor.
Nevertheless, I'm very much of a sentimental person when it comes to gear: memories get attached to the pixels, so the pixels have value.
Here are some of the questions I ask myself when deciding to keep or shard an item:
1. Is it easily replaceable?
I keep:
Many (but not all) VoG and Crota raid weapons, almost all elemental primaries. (One of each.)
Some Y1 Iron Banner weapons. (Dumped my Radagast Furies, but too many good times were had with Timur's Lash, Efreedet Spear, etc.) Some hard decisions need to be made occasionally here. If you have a LOT of stuff, one of the things you can ask yourself is "will I ever have a specialized need for this?") Remember the dude who soloed Oryx? He used a Corrective Measure at first to clear the adds because it has Surplus. Not many heavies have Surplus, which is a cool perk because once you kill a critter with the Surplus perk, that ammo drop will have the additional ammo, even if you switch out your CM.
The starting class items (white cloak, bond, mark.)
Nostalgic armor pieces are where tough calls need to be made. I have a full set of VoG armor for the hunter, but neither Titan nor Warlock had a full set, so away those pieces went. I don't like the way Crota stuff looks, so that all went away. I find it useful to focus on one character in terms of who gets vault space. I would love to have a full IB set, and Crota set etc for my characters, but that builds up fast. You gotta murder your darlings.
All Y1 exotic weapons have been sharded (since easily replaced) with a few exceptions: Gallie, Thorn, Ice Breaker, Vex.
All Y1 exotic armor has been sharded with 1-2 exceptions, mainly the hunter gloves that give you invisibility on crouching, and the Bones of Eao. (The latter I keep because of functionality: they have a "heavy weapon" mod, and I only use them for jumping puzzles.) Most of the useful Titan / Lock Y1 exotic armor exists in Y2, or can be repurchased.)
Unless I know I might be using them a lot, most 290 exotics get sharded. Things like the Bolean Gemini, Hereafter, etc.
Exception: the class-specific gunsmith legendaries are all kept, Stillpiercer, Immobius, and the lock one. I don't think it's possible to replace those.
2. Is it better than what I currently have?
Let's say I get a Hacksaw drop. (This applies to any legendary weapon):
Am I so wowed by the perks that I want to immediately start using it?
Is it equivalent or worse than the vendor one, which I can get pretty easily?
Can it be used as infusion fodder, and how many of this item type do I own / need dedicated to infusion?
3. Will I ever use it in the future?
This is where it gets tricky. One question to ask yourself is, what are your favorite weapon types? From my perspective, the list goes (primaries) Hand Cannons, Pulse, Scout, AR. Secondaries: Snipes, Shotties, Fusions, Sides.
As a result, I think I have one legendary AR (the new IB one), a dozen HCs, half a dozen Scouts and PRs. A median roll on a weapon you'll never use should either be infusion fodder, or sharded.
4. Can I use it now?
One method that's helped me is to immediately start using a questionable weapon on an alt -- whether it be on patrols, crucible, whatever. Level it up, see if you connect with it. This has allowed me to clear out a lot of "hmm, I'll have to check it out sometime" weapons
5. Which legendary boots, gloves, and chests?
For a while, I had a LOT of legendary boots and chest pieces, until I was able to boil it down to the necessities:
For boots, I keep:
One set of boots with MG ammo
One set of boots with RL ammo
I also like to have access to Sniper / Shotgun / Fusion (for the exotic) ammo, so on some characters, I have three pair, i.e. RL/Fusion, MG/Snipe, and Doesn't Matter/Shot.
Everything else can be sharded. When comparing similar boots, you can always look at the stats (INT/DIS/STR) and aesthetics to pick a winner.
For chests, it's a little easier, I like to keep
One chest with Sniper ammo, and my preferred elemental sub-class armor.
One chest with Shottie ammo (for crucible).
If you're an HC user in PVE, then you might want a Hand Cannon chest piece.
Another consideration is looks, of course!
Hope this helps!

I lol'd a lot!

Pretty sure those are special deliveries...
...and as such don't impact the total volume of the regular mailbox. But I could be wrong.

I DID IT AGAIN
Lost a Y1 Final Rest II that I might have used someday. :/
