What they *should* have done is establish essentially the same functional categories they did, but leave "planet" as an umbrella term, with the clear-the-orbit planets being called "non-dwarf" planets or some smoother modifier. That way Pluto can be a dwarf planet, and conversations about planets need not get derailled if someone dare refer to it as a planet.
