Well, Motes are based on experience, so I would say bounties. But there is also Nightfall(?) that can give you motes I think.
Crucible, seems like that's all that drops for me

What's the easiest way to Farm/Earn Motes of Light?
- Public events reward you with 5 motes for every gold completion.
- Leveling up rewards you with 5 motes.
- Completing bounties can give you motes as rewards along with rep.
- Blue engrams sometimes turn into a mote.
- Sharding leveled up blue gear rewards motes.
- Crucible sometimes rewards you with motes at the end of a match.
- Upon completion of the Black Garden quest, the Speaker gives you a mote.
Pretty sure that covers it.

I forgot about the public events giving you motes for gold. I wonder if you could farm those easily?
I'm wanting to build up a stash of motes to start leveling up some factions and thought there could be a quick way to do this?
I can't check, but can you buy Motes from the speaker?
You can buy motes with materials from VoG and CE.

Snap internet explorer (or edge, or whatever the browser is called). open up http://destinypublicevents.com/. it has a timer for every public event. just go wait in an area, or if you have friends, fan out into different areas.
they also have iphone and android apps

Seriously. As someone else said, you get them from experience for one thing, so definitely do bounties first and foremost. But otherwise they drop from practically everything, to the point where I'm not sure it's even worth singling out one activity. My mote balance is always going up even though I use them constantly, and I don't even play that much anymore.

Public events give between 3 and 8 per completion. You could get a lot of you do public events.
