Question about a mechanic in the Oryx Fight (Destiny)

by BeardFade ⌂, Portland, OR, Friday, January 22, 2016, 16:27 (3323 days ago)

Last night, I had the fortune of finishing the hardmode raid for the first time. Thanks to all those who helped. Having taken a few stabs at it, I learned of a mechanic that we didn't discover in the normal mode raid that I'm hoping you all can explain further.

After we've stunned Oryx, what triggers the timer for his blinding/killing light? In my normal mode raids, we have immediately gone and detonated our orbs, but in the hard mode raid, we cleared adds first. Honestly, my normal raid group didn't even know this was an option as we thought the timing had to be done right away.

So I guess my main question is, how do you know when you're out of time to go and detonate orbs?

Hmm... I remember taking a few seconds to kill adds even in normal mode; not doing so risked getting you killed during the short countdown to enter your corrupted light circle. I don't know what the trigger is - but I know you've always had 5-10 seconds leeway after he staggers before you have to be blowing up corrupted light. (Obviously, this is variable, based on how far away the aura circle is from your particular blight circle; if, for example, Oryx is in the back but your corrupted light circle is in the front, you've got less time overall than the guy who's 3 steps away from his corrupted light circle.)

i'm not sure of the exact timing either. It normally just a quick chance to throw nades, pick off any phalanx's and acoloyte eyes, and then head to your blight.

You don't know, it's more like a feeling. It's a surprisingly long amount of time. 30 seconds at least. When we first figured that out, we did it very very leisurely and occasionally hit his timer and detonated too late, so now we just kill all the adds in our own time, and when it looks safe, run for it.

There has to be some trigger, like exiting the aura or something.

It's all timed from his first slam, I think, though it's possible it's timed from stagger. The only part of that raid that is directly under player control for timing is the thunder dome iirc. I found a chart of the times once when the raid was new and forgot everything except for broad strokes.

I think Funk is right - the entire encounter is essentially on a single timer. The only control we have is that detonating the bombs skips you ahead to the Thunderdome/Airstrike. Running the Oryx challenge (not detonating any bombs until there are 16 on the ground) will illustrate just how much time you have after the stagger.

So what you're saying is that bomb detonation is the trigger for Oryx's blinding white light. I'll definitely be passing on the clear adds part to my normal raid group. Still have yet to do 16 orb strat, maybe I'll get some practice in this weekend.

The blinding white light is the corrupted light orb detonation effect. If you don't trigger at least one bomb within the 30 second window, you don't get any lighting effects and Oryx goes straight to Thunderdome.

This Is Usually What I Do.

After we light up Oryx, we run out to our lights, and while I'm just sitting there, I figured I could get rid of some enemies myself. So I run out there, immediately pull a 180, throw my grenade(usually Storm) and pick off any survivors until my channeling is complete. 90% success rate!
