Rift tips (Destiny)

by Durandal, Monday, January 25, 2016, 17:19 (3319 days ago)

With Rift coming up for IB, here are a few tips:

Rift is all about control. Your team needs to control the spark spawn zone, so you can take the spark and earn points moving towards the goal. Getting the spark and moving one or two dots consistently will eventually get you the lead.

Controlling the spark leads to the second step, the advance.

Advancing the Rift calls for teamwork. You need to extract from the spark zone, pick a line of advance and use your team to clear a path to the enemy rift. Striker Titans with TG, or blink Warlocks/Hunters are the best classes for this phase, as they are very maneuverable. When your team has the spark you need to call out to your runner which path is clear, or which is clogged with opponents.

Likewise this is a opportune time for Sunbreakers/Stormcallers to super and clear a path.

It is ok to fall back with the spark if you don't have much backup and have the other team breathing down your neck. Often the spark carrier causes tunnel vision and you can lure the other team into an ambush.

Losing the spark leads to a defensive setup: Call out the spark's direction. Your team needs to both block the spark runner's line of advance and pick off the other team's support which is going to try and flank you. Black hole tethers and suppression grenades are essential here to shut down the enemy supers that are going to come your way.

Every class can contribute!
Know your class and what areas it is most effective. Titans can drop blinding bubbles to create a choke point or a new strong point. Strikers can carry, or FoH to clear a hole for the runner. Gunslingers can trap a route, stop a team push with GG or create an opening to grab the spark. Nightstalkers can slow or shutdown supers and runners. Ram Voidwalkers can make a hole and carry in equal measure. Stormcallers and Sunbreakers are team wreckers. Durable Sunsingers can hold the center and force the other team to fall back from burns, all while making orbs for their team.

Focus on map control, call outs and strategic use of your super and with 10 of you Shaxx could end the NBA.

Alternatively, play as a fireteam and get mercy rule'd.

Spark Carrier Tips

  • Don't be too aggressive. If you have the spark, give your team time to push into the enemy territory. Hang back a bit an watch the names of your teammates to determine where the safest path is going to be.
  • Be agressive. Yes, this is opposite to the above, but depending on the situation sometimes the best thing to do is just push as far as you can as quickly as you can.
  • Get as close to the enemy rift as you can. You get bonus points the closer you can get before you die.
  • If you get stuck, try jumping over your opponent. That way they have to turn 180° to get you.
  • Titan Skate + MIDA + Twilight Garrison :)
  • Don't carry the spark if you don't have a high agility character. Let someone else carry it instead.

*Team full of Defender titans.

*Wait until everyone has their supers up.

*Pop bubble over relic spawn, whole team piles into bubble, pick up relic.

*Teammate runs out, pops another bubble 10 feet away, in the direction of the enemy rift, returns to first bubble to collect orbs. Whole team moves to bubble number 2.

*Next teammate pops another bubble a few feet closer to the enemy rift. As each player drops a bubble, they retreat backwards to collect orbs from the previous bubbles to refill their supers. Repeat you reach enemy rift.

*Profit.

I have serious doubts that this would ever work, but I'd love to give it a try :)

Twilight mr. Garrison

Mmmkay?

I've had some success as a lone wolf in rift running with twighlight garrison.

Dash-> skate-> dash lets you move really unpredictably. You can corner like nothing else, and even take some fortified positions by surprise. If you can get a small push from another direction, it can often be enough to cover the sprint with your super speed.

Make sure to keep trying for control of the Rift as well, even if you know you're not going to live. I played a game once (not on IB) where we scored on the opposing team twice, and killed them almost immediately every time they grabbed the Spark...but they kept grabbing the Spark. And getting those extra points, they literally failed themselves to the top and won. Imagine how pissed we were that they won by dying and not scoring any goals. So make sure to clear out the enemy team first, and keep grabbing the Spark.

True, but do your best not to die quickly if you get the spark. Fall back behind cover and let your team protect you.
