So, i thought people were whining too much about IB Rift... (Destiny)

Game 1: Loss, mercy rule
Game 2: Loss, mercy rule within 2 minutes.
Game 3: Loss, 20k to 8k. Down a person the entire game.
Game 4: Loss, 20k to 16k. Closer because there was a fireteam on both sides.
Game 5: Loss, 20k to 15k, with the same group.
I've been killed as soon as I spawn several times.
The lag is causing me to spam my respawn button, but not letting me respawn. This seems to always happen at the worse time. Maybe it's time to sit this one out.

Did you hop into it alone?

This IB, more than any other before it, requires you to play in a full fire team to have a solid chance of victory. Playing a heavily-team-based gametype with zero communication is bound to suck.
To my defense, I'm pretty sick and can barely talk. Can't really communicate anyway.
If the other team scored first, teammates started quitting. This isn't a gametyoe to be down 2 or 3 people without it getting nasty by the time someone else joins. I enjoy rift when I'm just goofing around, but this isn't fun.
Want to know how little fun I was having? I quit to play Halo 5 campaign.
And I get a black screen mid dunk and the game fails to respond. #ThanksInternet
Luckily, there's new tomb raider DLC.

Nope, it's bad

I REALLY wish I had that game. My self-imposed but necessary spending freeze came at a bad time.

Mercy rule also doesn't correctly give IB Rep.

According to a post on Low Sodium Destiny if you win by Mercy rule you don't get IB rep.

I don't know if htat's true - we only won a single game (out of 9), and it was mercy rule... and I have 231 rep right now.

Yeah, I definitely cannot confirm as I haven't played. I just saw the post and figured I'd let people know of the potential issue.
I haven't seen many games end by Mercy, but it's almost always been in Rift when I have seen it, so imagine it'll be more common this week as coordinated Fireteams get together to roll over all the solo players.

3 is the number, and the number shall be 3

I was doing ok with a fireteam of 3 last night, but after we lost one guy it dropped us into two games where there was perhaps a minute left and another where there were three people total on my team, the enemy had supers and heavy and was one dunk from the win.
It seems like you really need a group of three to avoid the worst of the matchmaking issues, and it seems the medallions are not enough to encourage people to stick around.

Huh. Mercy rule didn't happen for us last night at all.

Even up 10,000 points (14,000 to 4,000) and Shaxx said "This isn't a fight; it's a massacre" which usually triggers the mercy rule, we didn't get it and the game still lasted to 20,000.

Weird. The one game we had where it kicked in ended at ~13k - 4k. (It probably got called a bit before that.)

No Mercy Medal

Here's the link to one of our games last night that we mercy ruled the other team.
I wonder why we didn't get mercy in our games? Games like these all should have mercy at some point during play, but went all the way to 20k every time:
Game 1
Game 2
Game 3
Game 4
Game 5
Game 6
Game 7
Game 8
Not all of these ended with us up by 10k or more, but in every one of them we certainly were up by 10k at some point pretty early on.

What I think it is.

I believe the mercy rule kicks in when you are at a 4:1 point ratio. So 12k to 4k in control and it kicks in.
I got mercy ruled in a game of zone control last week and that was pretty rough lol

Seems reasonable, but riddle me this: Why did we get Shaxx's audio "This isn't a fight, it's a massacre!" to play, but the mercy rule never kicked in? That's the audio he normally plays when it's mercy time.

We had a few games on both sides of the mercy rule tonight. It seems to kick in at the 12k mark for rift. We had one game where we were down 12k to less than 1k and another around 12k to 3k. I'm guessing the check comes in at 12k and if you are 3x or 4x the other teams score it just calls the game.
Of the many totally blowout games tonight, we finally got a real mercy win. Not sure what was different about it, other than the other team all quit so they only had two players who were both just sitting down waiting to lose.

I thought Shax always said something when one team reaches 19K points, and that is just one of his lines.
at 19k it's like "Finish them!" or "You've almost won" - something like that.
At the "mercy rule" margin (10k or 14k or whatever it is) the line is "send them home crying!" or "This isn't a fight; it's a massacre!" ... Shaxx is a little more brutal when employing the mercy rule.

Hopped in with SquidNH3 and a couple of his friends last night. At only 309 light I wasn't getting a huge number of kills, but over 4 games I was the top scoring player because I ran the spark. Also we won 3 out of 4 of those games and had loads of fun.

That's why you liked it. This is a terrible gametype for going on alone. The other gametypes where managable alone. I also think zone control would be manageable alone, and would at least make those people who are sitting in one spot hard-scoping the entire game useful.
This guy has summed up my thoughts pretty well. At least the bad points, because I didn't experience any of the good ones.

Iron Banner is better with a group anyway

By choosing Rift, Bungie is basically saying that Iron Banner is a team activity this time around. It seems like Bungie always intended Destiny to be a game where players rarely play alone so I guess it shouldn't be surprising.

IB has always benefited from a group!

Absolutely every IB has been better with a group. The clash one is the only one where you could be solo and possibly pull your team to a win, but it was rare, at least for me. There isn't a single team game type that doesn't benefit from a group.
First, there's a 10 second delay for respawn on Rift which doesn't exist in control or clash. That's not lag, it's design.
Second, are you on PS4? Send me a message and I'll invite you along with my crew tonight if we have room. We win 90% of our rift games and our runner is one of the top scoring rift players in the world (#17 in average rift score as of yesterday).
Quick tips:
- If you're not in a team, message good players after the game and see if they want another player.
- Only one guy needs to be the rift runner on your team (and a designated backup if that one guy dies before he can grab the rift). Everyone else should push towards the enemy spawn to keep the rift spawn clear.
- The rift runner needs to be either a skate titan or have blink. Max agility + MIDA + (if you're a hunter) Radiant Dance Machines are all HUGE helps. You need to get there asap, blink to the rift, and dunk before the enemy can fall back and defend.
- Always pick up the spark if you're the only one around. Never ever ever let the enemy get it.
- Bubbles on the spark, tethers on the spark, etc.. all very helpful. Save your supers for rift defense, rift offense, or spark clearance. Don't use supers outside of those areas.
- Controlling heavy ammo controls the game. It's worth letting the enemy grab the spark if it means your team will get both heavy ammo spawns. Just send your runner to the spark (he's not shooting anyone anyway) and hope he can grab it while the rest of your team gets heavy.

A few things

I don't know. Often times it seems the rift spawns just before the heavies. If you are a quick spark runner, you can grab the spark and score while everyone else is busy grabbing heavies. I did it a couple of times when I played the other night. It was nice not having anyone to stop you from scoring. :P
