SUPERHOT (Destiny)
You've really been holding onto that 2+ years... Bravo.
Then again, this is "Quitting Destiny" Cody that we're talking about, you're likely better off buying it on your own if you ever want to play it. ;)
Still waiting on that writeup, Cody!
You've really been holding onto that 2+ years... Bravo.
Actually I'd forgotten all about it but The Verge tweeted about it today which reminded me (had to laugh at their superlative-laden review though). I felt like I should check it out and see if they added anything more innovative to its mechanics.
SUPERHOT
Tell me your steam name and I'll gift it to you. It's kapowaz right? The game unlocks in about 5 hours.
You've really been holding onto that 2+ years... Bravo.

Wait just a little longer. Most likely on monday.

Polygon says, "Rather, it demonstrates a wonderful sense of moderation, of giving the player precisely as much as is needed for a great, satisfying experience. It never feels the need to repeat itself, whether to drive a point home or just to increase the total playtime."
Sounds like exactly what I've heard Cody advocate for time and time again, and sounds great in principle, if the gameplay is actually interesting enough to hold up for a few hours.
Man. The Verge is a little enthusiastic.

Someone I know showed this review of SUPERHOT to me. Looks really cool actually.
SUPERHOT *video*
If only that wasn't a TB video and I could watch. He gets on my nerves.

Don't like the British? I see how it is...
Nailed it. (:
I hate those darn Brits!
But seriously, he just bugs me. The perfect example of elitist douche. If it's not on PC, he doesn't care, which is fine, but he just assumes that console games can't be good. I don't care what anyone that close-minded has to say about anything.

Hmmm, I've only seen two things from him, and he doesn't come off that way to me. But then again, I've only seen two things.

Honestly, he might not talk about it that often. I listened to a few of his podcasts a while ago and he would say stuff like, "but yeah, that's a console game so it's automatically shit" pretty often. I guess that's an okay opinion to have if he wants, but I think it's a pretty stupid way to look at things, and if that's how he judges things, then I don't care what he thinks.
He probably has insightful opinions on some stuff, and I don't want to discourage anyone from watching his videos or listening to him. I just personally won't.
SUPERHOT
Cheers buddy. I will see whether it's any better than you expected!

Many things bother me about him, but he is an interesting figure nevertheless. First of all, he's simply not a very good critic, and he focuses on the most absolutely banal aspects of games and always talks about 'consumers' and stuff. He frequently spends over 10 minutes going through the options menus of PC games to evaluate them, which is the biggest waste of time ever. For instance his Street Fighter 5 video is 15 minutes long, and 12 is covering the options menu. You can sum it up in a single sentence: "The servers are down and you need them to play, and you can't rebind keys". Both are bad. It took you maybe 10 seconds to read that? So why does he go on for 15 minutes?
HIs analysis is generally either performance related, business related, about technical matters, or it is incredibly shallow. Yet he still goes on and on in an incredibly verbose way. His videos could easily be significantly shorter.
He is also incredibly thin skinned and petty. He cries and pitches a hissy fit instead of defending himself. He supported gamergate and doesn't think that racism is a problem in England.
If you want actual insight in your reviews or to actually hear someone who understands and appreciates games as art, he is not your guy.

Did I do a bad thing by posting this?
I'm sorry, I take everything back. I actually DO want presents from Santa this year!

Don't worry, I got you.
In all seriousness, I was just cranky. As soon as I hit post, I debated just deleting it, because I'm not sure any of this was a conversation worth having. Too late now, though!
(:
Kapowaz!
I haven't seen you since pre-Destiny! Where you been?

Seriously, though, this is a pretty cool community.
Great stuff if you can get by that.

That part of his channel bugs me. He's a PC-first, PC-mostly, would-be-PC-only-if-he-could gamer, and I'm just the opposite.
A lot of his reviews start off with the Settings menu and stay there for thirty minutes. He'll walk right up to every texture in the game and talk about how "low quality" it is.
That said... the REST of the content on his channel is top-notch stuff, if you can get by the rest.
Nailed it. (:

All of those topics are very worthwhile.
or it is incredibly shallow.
I don't find it that. YMMV. Or are you saying that because he really, really liked SuperHot and you decided two years ago you didn't?
Yet he still goes on and on in an incredibly verbose way. His videos could easily be significantly shorter.
Yes, by cutting out all the stuff he cares about-- performance, settings menus, consumer advocacy.
He is also incredibly thin skinned and petty. He cries and pitches a hissy fit instead of defending himself. He supported gamergate and doesn't think that racism is a problem in England.
Yeah, and there's that. You'll hear strains of that if you listen to much of Yahtzee's non-zero punctuation content as well.
Nailed it. (:
Yeah, and there's that. You'll hear strains of that if you listen to much of Yahtzee's non-zero punctuation content as well.
Yahtzee does not proclaim himself as " Youtube's #1 PC gaming critic". He knows what he is primarily: an entertainer and comic. I can't speak for his columns, but his zero punctuation videos are entertaining and funny, but not insightful. That's why I am completely fine with him.
Great stuff if you can get by that.

I enjoyed the podcast he puts out, for the most part. They have interesting discussions. I don't even care that he doesn't like console games, but his attitude about it turns me off. He seems to truly believe that just because it's on a console it can't be a good game. I even understand caring about performance, but if you're not even willing to look at a game's other merits and completely write off a game because it's not 1080p 60fps without deviation, then that tells me everything I need to know and I'm not all that interested in hearing more.
Maybe that makes me just as in-the-wrong and closed minded as he is. I try not to be like that, but in this case, I just haven't been able to get beyond it.
Wasn't referencing that.

I was talking about supporting GamerGate and not thinking racism is a problem, or, to put it more mildly, not wanting to go "full SJW" as he has called it because he thinks people get too upset about those sort of things.
As for not being "Youtube's #1 PC gaming critic" I would say he doesn't say that, but only because he considers YouTube an inferior platform and has a smaller following there than he has on the Escapist's own site.
He does take credit for coining the term "PC Master Race" though, but he does claim he was being ironic.
Great stuff if you can get by that.

I think as a Mac user, I enjoy it as schadenfreude. He complains about Windows getting poor ports, late, or sometimes never, because of the focus on console platforms as better and more profitable markets. It reminds me of what Mac gaming was like (and, if I'm honest, mostly still is) in the pre-PlayStation era when PC gaming on Windows was where everybody wanted to be and consoles were still just for kids.
I enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed it.
The game proves more difficult than it would initially seem (although it still isn't really hard). But it's very fun, at least for the two hours I've spent with it so far.
It's the best Matrix game ever made. (:
The menus are perfect, the art is slick, the time mechanic is fun to play with, and it makes you feel like a badass. Honestly, the only thing that could make this game even better would be a level editor. User-designed levels would just be incredible.
It incorporates a site they called killstagram--what else do you need to know?
