Who here plays on a gaming monitor? (Off-Topic)

After having a talk with my GF about our upcoming move, it sounds like the game plan for my future gaming will be sitting in front of a computer monitor instead of in the living room on our big screen tv. I'll be going from a 47" TV to either a 24" or 27" monitor on a desk.

I'm actually kind of excited for this change as it will allow me to set up my computer and gaming all in the same area. Plus I already sit way too close to my big screen and I think shrinking the monitor may help my game play some.

I've read some reviews on the Asus and BenQ monitors and will probably pick up one of those depending on some factors outside of pure performance.

For gaming on an xbone and potentially on my macbook pro for some light steam games. What are some factors I should be looking at. Does going from a 24" to a 27" make a big difference? I already have a nice older 24" dell graphics monitor for doing work that I'll be running next to whatever gaming monitor I get.

For gaming on an xbox I really only need a 1920x1080 monitor. But my laptop can push out a higher resolution which has me considering a nicer monitor.

So for those of you who game on a monitor, what are some things I should either look out for or really consider when purchasing a monitor? Specs aside. I'm looking for the intangible things to consider.

Don't really have anything useful to say other than I play on a monitor instead of a large tv. I actually have an HDMI 3-1 switcher so that with the push of a button my screen will show my Xbox or my computer. I've really enjoyed the setup and imagine anyone else would, too.

I had an Asus before I got an HDTV. The biggest thing for gaming is the response time and latency. Asus is great in that area.

Consider quality of life points. Is the stand sturdy? Can you move it around easily? Change inputs? Asus monitors kind of suck with regards to controls because they lack physical buttons, and the touch ones don't work half the time.

This is what some of the BenQ monitors seem to excel at. They have a headphone holder on the back of the monitor and seem to have good stands. I've considered getting a different stand that will hold dual monitors off the same base.

Thanks for the tips on the Asus buttons.

I know several people that do play on them and love it. However, they are playing on high end monitors.

For instance This one

Monitors are rather pricey, but you dont really need anything crazy like the one above, just something that has 60 mhz refresh rate. Also you want a really low response time, <= 5 MS should be good.

I would recommend only using a with a monitor that has a native resolution that matches the output of the console. (1080p) Any resolution above that will cause pixel redistribution problems and minor blurriness. Here's a decent option if you're going to upgrade:

The monitor you linked to is the one I'm considering if I go to a resolution higher than 1920x1080.

Since I'm not really gaming on a PC it seems like it could be a waste of money. The full resolution would be nice when doing design work on my laptop though.

I don't use a gaming monitor per say, but I do have a little 19" 720p television that I use late at night or when my wife is using our main tv. I put it on a chair and sit on the floor a couple feet away from it. Funny thing is, my PvP game gets considerably better while playing on that tiny screen. I don't know if it's a case of having less latency than our 46", or if it's purely an issue of screen size and/or proximity, but I jump from averaging a k/d of roughly 1-1.5 all the way up to 2-3. Whatever the exact reason, I feel like I need to move my eyes around less while playing on the small screen. I don't get caught off guard by something on one edge of the screen while I'm focusing on another portion of the screen, which I've noticed happens to me fairly often on my big screen.

That's the main reason I can't play on my TV anymore

I feel like I'm always missing some detail, while on my monitor it feels like I'm an all-seer

Pretty much everything said is good, response time and resolution are key. I used to travel a lot with a Samsung and had no issues with it on my 360 (it was also a fixed height). I currently use two ASUS for my computer and the one doubles as my xbox one screen. The below ASUS is usually around 110-115$ after rebate.

Gaming Monitor

I haven't had any issues with them. I use HDMI for the Xbox One and DVI for my computer. If you plan to travel with it, check the weight and if it looks flimsy or if it has a lot of plastic that could break off of it shifts during transit. I never owned an adjustable height one, just tilt, so I cant comment on that. I can see the value of it if you go different places or your seating arrangement warrants that feature. I use the stereo headset adapter for the controller, so I rarely use audio out of a monitor in case you were wondering about sound quality.

I ended up moving from my bigscreen to my 27" dell U2713HM monitor. It's not a gaming monitor, and according to AnandTech it has a display lag of 29.5ms (other sites say as low as 21ms). I do MUCH better on it than I do on my bigscreen tv. What the crap!? I must have pretty bad display lag on my big screen tv.

edit: got the right model & stuff.

I play on a 23" Samsung monitor that I've had for years and isn't anything fancy. The video quality is still better than my other big-screen TVs. I have the monitor sitting on the coffee table a few feet in front of the couch. The main benefit for me playing on the monitor is that I, or one of my kids, can be playing video games while wife and/or the other kids can be watching a movie/TV/or playing a different video game on the bigger TV that's on the wall. That's a pretty invaluable benefit in my house, such that even if I were to buy a brand new 70" 4K flat-screen, I would really have to think twice about switching the PS4 and Xbone to the bigger one.
