Scariest Destiny Mission? (Destiny)

by Morpheus @, High Charity, Saturday, February 27, 2016, 19:31 (3286 days ago)

Any of those missions ever give you a chill up your spine? Make you shudder and/or jump? Don't try to hide it--you know you were a little freaked out by those Knights under The Steppes the first time you saw them.

I know Last Rites really had me sweating, but I think my worst one(still) is The Archive. All those Stealth Vandals...the sounds they make...ohh, I'm shuddering just thinking about it. And when Lightswitch used to be on?! Uh-uh. Whenever I do that mission, I always always always stand on something above ground. The floor is friggin' lava.

Any of you?

That dark room with the Vex. I have never not run through that room. I don't know the layout, I don't know what enemies are in it. It's dark and scary.

It's the only scary part of the game, IMO.

The dark room with only red glowing from the Vex juice boxes. definitely one of those areas I still hate to visit.

Never thought I'd hear that as a response! When I saw that part, I laughed at the notion of a Darkness Zone in the dark. Y'know, if you go to one of the corners and sit down, the lighting glitch will occur and the whole place will light up! You can see everything!

The lighting glitch...I don't know the exact name of it, but it has something to do with the dynamic lighting. In certain areas, especially where the lighting changes quickly, you can manipulate it by adjusting your camera to a certain position, usually by crouching or sitting. The most famous one is in the Skywatch. That's an example. But other places, like the Lunar Complex and the Tharsis Junction, they all have places like that.

Interesting. Never heard of that glitch, never seen it before. Sort of curious to try your trigger on Mars.

Scariest Destiny Mission?

by CruelLEGACEY @, Toronto, Monday, February 29, 2016, 00:39 (3285 days ago) @ Morpheus

I don't personally find any of the missions in Destiny scary at all. The Gorgons' Labyrinth was genuinely terrifying when we were going for Flawless Raider, but that had more to do with the pressure of the achievement than the encounter itself.

The more I think about the Destiny universe, the more I believe the Guardians are the most frightening thing in it. An army of unkillable zombies who spend their time killing thousands upon thousands of aliens, taking breaks only to dance and do sparrow tricks or grab new loot. We really must seem like a nightmare to the other races. I'd love to see this aspect of the story expanded upon, from the perspective of the Fallen or Awoken. What must the Awoken think of us? It must have been a huge leap of desperation for the Queen to reach out to the Guardians for help.

...At first, based on nothing other than size and firepower, I'm tempted to think about Guardians as on par with the hoards they fight, and the "big bosses" (Strike and Raid level) are a level (or few) up, but I think this is wrong. I think Guardians are on the same "level" as the Hive bosses, if for no other reason than their shared "unkillability". You can't really kill Oryx or Crota outside of their "home dimension" (or whatever it's called), similarly you can't really kill a Guardian outside of a Darkness Zone (and even then, are we "dead" if we just respawn at the edge?)

Actually, as I type it out, they're backwards; Oryx and Crota are MORE powerful (less killable) the farther they are from "home", but Guardians are more vulnerable the farther they are from the Travelers Light (our "home").

I don't know where I was going with that...I guess I just find the odd inverted parallel interesting. Also, the physical size of a Guardian severely belies their power.

Tell that to Atheon, Crota, and Oryx.

That's really the only sort of issue I have. Oryx is supposed to be this incredibly powerful being, crushing everything in his path. Six normal Guardians made short work of him. Yeah, it's a video game, and one that doesn't take itself too seriously, but where do they go from here? Oryx is already an absolutely stupid powerful foe in the scheme of Destiny--where do they go next? Are we just going to be taking on exponentially more ridiculously powerful enemies?

It's a good question but maybe it needs to be split into a question of lore and a question of gameplay?

Lore wise, there's the known enemies like Oryx's siblings, the Vex, a full on attack by the Cabal, Rasputin, and perhaps a powerful lost Fallen house. Oh, and the Darkness itself. But there's also other threats. One of the races Oryx beat using his power to Take enemies had a queen powerful enough to personally destroy an entire Hive moon.

And then there's the foreshadowed threat of more rogue Guardians. Dregden Yor outright killed Jaren Ward with a single shot of Thorn. And Yor was still something resembling a Guardian who still needed a Ghost to resurrect. Toland the Shattered seems to have learned Omnigul's song of death and ascended to the Hive's netherworlds. Osiris we know less about but it's possible he has done something similar with the Vex. They might be quite a bit more powerful and would be knowledgeable about how to beat Guardians still on the side of the Light.

On gameplay, I can hardly imagine all the future foes and puzzles we might have to contend with. For things to make our lives harder / show how powerful new enemies are they could separate us from our Ghosts or there could be missions that have our backs to the wall while trying to hold off pure Darkness enemies that can only be killed with Supers while having a reduced recharge rate.

Maybe they might even pit us against other Guardians (as in real players) in Patrol or in story missions via faction war. Or maybe we can be captured by the Darkness and the only way to break free is to consume the Light of other Guardians.

I do agree it feels kinda funny to have defeated what we currently think was one of the most powerful forces in the universe, but I think (and hope) Destiny's story and potential gameplay are adaptable enough to support a wide range of new challenges. :)

So one thing I felt was strangely missing from Destiny was the complete lack of getting to witness what Guardians were capable of. Aside from running in to higher level players in patrol during the first 10 hours or so, the player is always the most powerful thing we see in action. I'm not much of an RPG player, but just about every RPG I have played gives the player the opportunity to see great power in action. You might encounter a foe with incredible abilities far beyond your own, only to meet them again down the road once your own powers have grown to match them. Or you might see a friendly NPC show some awesome display of abilities which you can then slowly learn for yourself. I always enjoyed these moments, because they gave me a dramatic visual example of what I was aspiring towards with my character. It's very empowering to meet characters with seemingly Godlike powers, only to grow over the course of the game to the point where you match or even exceed them.

But in Destiny, we never get any of that. There are tidbits in the Grimoire that give us hints of how powerful some of the great guardians of the past were. It stands to reason that the Vanguard are capable of some incredible things. I want to actually SEE some of that.

I think TTK took some baby steps towards that. The mission where we acquire the Voidwalker's bow has us following in the footsteps of a powerful guardian. We see the remnants of his foes, destroyed by power that was at the time beyond us. But the weight of that experience is somewhat deflated by the fact that you acquire the bow moments later and instantly unleash insane levels of devastating power, easily trashing the Vex troops who had just killed the "powerful" guardian we had been tracking.

We also got to see Eris use her spooky teleportation spell, which was a cool moment. And the "encounter" with the Titans on Mercury hinted at guardians far beyond our own level of power, although we didn't get to actually see anything.

We also had the climb towards Oryx himself, although that didn't feel as satisfying as I would have thought. Probably because our guardians are pretty much fully-powered at the start of TTK. We acquire new gear with higher numbers on them, but that's not as satisfying as seeing real growth of our abilities. We got the new subclasses, but that felt more like de-powering our already powerful guardians by reverting us to an empty skill tree. (Don't get me wrong: I'm not complaining about the new subclasses, just saying that the way the were added didn't scratch the specific itch I'm talking about).

I hope we get to see more NPC guardians in action in the future. I want to see them do incredible, "legendary" things.

Embarrassing confession. I recently brought my Xbox hunter out of retirement and managed to die on that level.

Recalling one of Raga's suggestions regarding taking away our ghost/revive ability, wouldn't it be cool to stumble upon a guardian being defeated rather than finding his body much later. What a dramatic way to introduce an enemy!

Nothing would scare the shit out of me more than seeing a guarding in the distance in ultimate form (Blade dancer, Storm caller, Hammers) and then seeing a new enemy just pick them up in some form and watch the light get drained out of them.

That would be AWESOME! I always thought one of the cooler moments in the Gears of War series was a couple hours into the first game when we see General Raam for the first time and he just walks over to Kim and finishes him off like he was nothing. They'd established Kim as a pretty badass soldier, so that helped make Raam appear extra intimidating.

Sammy and I were doing all of TTK missions when we thought we had reached the end of LtL. She went into her menu to mess with Gear, while I turned to look at my phone. Suddenly, the controllers started rattling, and before we could react, she was dead, and we were being told to run, so after trying to Rez her for a bit (to no success), I booked it out half-dead and with enemies pouring out of every orifice. It was exciting and scary.
Sure, it's a cakewalk now, but the first time has stuck with me...
