Idle Speculation on the next expansion (Destiny)

by Durandal, Monday, March 07, 2016, 15:46 (3277 days ago)

In the old plan, the Vex were the next antagonists. Much like the Fallen and Hive, the Vex have suffered significant degradation due to Guardian activity. The loss of the Heart of Darkness and the Black Garden, Atheon falling, hasn't fallen, will fall again, the interruption of their efforts to expand their mechanisms on Venus and the depredations of the taken have caused numerous problems for them.

And yet they, not the Hive, are still the ones the Exo Stranger is worried about. Our Exo Dr. Who (bless her mechanical heart) keeps stepping back in time to deal with the Vex.

From our limited perspective, time travel appears to violate both the laws of physics and causality. Technology, and agents can appear without warning and take action to effect time. The only regions not affected by this are those the Vex have "locked outside of time." Only these areas are outside the light cones of the past, and thus allow the Vex to retain information from one iteration to another.

Thus the Exo Stranger must be operating from a similar space, and we know the Vex are searching for it.

What if the Knights of Crota/Taken events are replaced with Vex Search teams? Meanwhile a cosmic treasure hunt ensues while Guardians move to secure places and things of import that protect the Stranger's base in the future? Only to find out we need to locate Osirus, who has been painstakingly mapping the timeline of the Vex portals, rather then their location?

Anyway, just an idle thought since we seem to have given up on the fluff during these Taken King doldrums.

I just want VoG to be mechanically relevant again :(

Also, more info on Osiris and co.

And open up the Lighthouse as a social space already!

VoG as a raid hub

Something like WoW's vaults of time, where the VoG has portals back to "epic moments in history!!!" that you can do as strikes/raids? I'd vote for that.

Why not just load up VoG if you want to replay it?

I am for making the enemy levels in raids scale to the current maximum, but beyond that I don't see why they should put development time in to old stuff. We want new adventures and new raids.

The idea is that exploring elsewhere in the VoG would portal you to new content, not rehash the current raid, much like the Paradox mission.

I agree 100%.

I always get confused when people talk about making the old content "relevant." It is relevant, if you do stuff for fun. Fatebringer is still as fun today as it always was, regardless of whether it's feasible in new content. It's fun to revisit things, why should they have to add anything or add current loot tables to old stuff? It's a waste of time. Play it if you want to enjoy it, ignore it if you only want to get current drops.

I'd rather a new hub area for that...

A new area that has vex teleporters would be easy to do and make a lot of sense. I mean, there's lots of vex teleporters around on mars and venus, no reason why we couldn't use some of the existing ones as well.

But reuse of content is not appropriate in all areas. I expect we will see a new area if we ever get something like this.

Agreed

VoG is still my favorite raid.

It seems like it would be really easy to make two modes in addition to the originals: a normal mode with enemies scaled up to lvl 38-40, and a hard mode with enemies scaled to level 40-42 or so.

There's a ton of vex gates up there, hacked with fallen tech.

ignore it if you only want to get current drops.

This is the problem, and why I was very careful to ask that it be made mechanically relavent. It's still the most fun thing to do in Destiny, but Destiny is already such a time vampire that it can be hard to convince other people to do things if there's no way character progression factors in.

I guess I don't understand what you mean by that, then. /:

I've run VoG 3 times in the past week or two (hadn't run it for months before that). Start to finish is about 40 minutes, less if nobody screws up. Daughters on KF can take that alone, easy. (I'm not saying Destiny's not a time vampire, I'm saying VoG is way less of one than other parts of the game. :) )
